Brent is a product of the community college system, graduating from Allan Hancock Community College in Santa Maria, CA. As a first-generation university student in his family, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business, a master’s degree in mathematics, and a PhD in education.
After teaching math in a typical lecture format for 27 years, the pandemic forced him to redo his teaching style. Brent now teaches his math classes in a flipped format. The students watch Brent’s pre-recorded lecture video on YouTube, attempt the homework problems for the current sections, then attend the live synchronous class sessions. In the live sessions, Brent will give a quick 15-20 minute overview of the sections, then answer any questions on the material or on the homework problems. This has two main advantages: The students can watch (and re-watch) the video lectures as many times as they need to in order to learn the material, and it frees up class time to answer any and all questions and have the students do many more example problems than there would otherwise be time for.
