Urinetown: The Musical is a razor-sharp, irreverently humorous satire set in a Gotham-like dystopian future devastated by a 20-year drought. With water scarce, the government has outlawed private toilets, forcing all citizens to use public amenities controlled by the corrupt megacorporation Urine Good Company (UGC), which profits from charging steep fees for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Those who cannot pay risk being taken away to the mysterious and feared “Urinetown.”
Amid this oppressive system, Bobby Strong—a sincere, idealistic restroom attendant—begins to question the status quo after his father is punished for violating the law. Inspired by Hope Cladwell—the naïve yet warm-hearted daughter of Caldwell B. Cladwell, UGC’s villainous CEO—Bobby leads his fellow citizens in a bold rebellion against corporate greed and political corruption. As love blossoms and civil unrest ignites, the citizens’ struggle for freedom, dignity, and basic human rights reveals that rebellion, like tyranny, can have surprising and far-reaching consequences.
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown blends high-energy comedy, biting social commentary, meta-theatrical humor, and self-aware storytelling into a fast-paced, larger-than-life theatrical experience. Praised for reinvigorating modern musical theatre—with multiple Tony, Obie, Lortel, and Outer Critics Circle Awards—the show skewers capitalism, bureaucracy, environmental collapse, social irresponsibility, and musical theatre itself. Hilariously funny and unexpectedly sincere, Urinetown remains a boldly original, award-winning satire with unbridled wit and heart.
LOVE AND INFORMATION
By Caryl Churchill
Directed by Bonnie Dolan
Performing Arts Center Studio Theater
Performances May 7 - 17, 2026
Someone sneezes. Someone can’t get a signal. Someone won’t answer the door. Someone put an elephant on the stairs. Someone’s not ready to talk. Someone is her brother’s mother. Someone hates irrational numbers. Someone told the police. Someone got a message from the traffic light. Someone’s never felt like this before.
In this fast moving kaleidoscope, more than a hundred characters try to make sense of what they know.
Love and Information is a collection of over 50 nonlinear microdramas that all revolve around the intersection of human connection and information. The play explores how the dissemination or withholding of information, the type of information, and the method of disclosure affects relationships for better and for worse. It also explores memory, overwhelm, technology, communication, and meaning.
This production will seek to highlight the overlap of the natural world and the digital world - where the two mirror each other, where they learn from one another, and where they vie for power over each other. The production will investigate the mathematical patterns that appear in both nature and technology, and how that interfaces with the magic of the chaotic unpredictability that is the human experience.
The process will involve collaboration with everyone on the production team and cast. The director is specifically looking to devise movement pieces that further develop and expand the themes present in the story, so rehearsals will be physically and creatively active and engaging.

Do I need to sign up for a time slot to audition?
No. Auditions are not done by appointment. Auditioners can arrive as early as 5:30pm to check-in on the day of the audition and should plan on being there until you dismissed by the stage management team.
Do I have to be a student to audition for a show at IVC?
The auditions are open to anyone. However, anyone cast in a production must enroll in the related course - some classes have zero-tuition costs. If you are not already enrolled as an IVC Student and you are cast in a production, you will have to apply for admission the college and enroll in the course(s) that represent your participation in the show.
What about accompaniment for my song?
An accompanist will be available at the auditions. Bring sheet music in the correct key, with cuts clearly indicated for the accompanist. There is also a Bluetooth speaker available if you wish to sing with an accompaniment track from your phone.
Do I have to take classes in addition to being in the show?
People that are cast in the show enroll in one or more classes that reflect their participation in the rehearsals and performances. Participants are not required to take additional technique classes during the daytime.
Can high school or middle school students audition?
Absolutely. The department casts high school and middle school students on a regular basis. There is some extra paperwork involved in order to enroll the students in the college courses. Acknowledgement from the student's school Principal is required.
Can I audition for both shows? Can I audition for just one show?
Yes. Auditions are held for both shows simultaneously. If you prefer to be considered for one show and not the other, you can indicate this in the audition form.
What should I wear to the audition?
Dress in appropriate attire that can show us who you are, how seriously you take your audition, and will allow you to move freely and comfortably if asked to do so. It is not necessary or desirable to costume yourself for the audition.
When are rehearsals scheduled?
Rehearsals are scheduled between the hours of 6-10 pm Mondays-Fridays, and Saturdays 11am-6pm. Rehearsal schedules differ per production and details about the rehearsals can be found in the individual production Audition Notices. While rehearsal schedules differ between productions, the cumulative hours of rehearsal are comparbale for both shows. Although you may not be called for all rehearsals, you will need to be available for every rehearsal until released by the weekly schedule. You will be given a weekly and daily rehearsal schedule so you will know what your call times will be for any rehearsal.
If I have a scheduled trip or event during the rehearsal period, will that preclude me from being cast?
Not necessarily. Allowances can be made in the rehearsal schedule if you disclose all known conflicts ahead of time on your audition form. There are REQUIRED DATES that will preculde auditioners from being cast, those differ between productions and are outlined in each audition notice.
What if I don't sing. Can I still be in the musical?
Very possibly! Musicals often include non-singing roles. It just depends on the production, make sure to review the Audition Notice for the musical.
What if I have classes or work on weeknights?
In general, if you want to be cast in a show, you will have to clear your schedule to be available for rehearsals. Some limited allowances can be made during the rehearsal process, and we do our best to schedule rehearsals based on the conflicts that are presented to us at auditions. However, everyone auditioning must be available for all of the required dates (e.g., tech, make-up/hair training, dress rehearsal, and performance dates) to be considered for a role.
Are any rehearsals held on weekends?
The first show of the semester regularly rehearses on Saturdays. Some additional rehearsals, costume fittings, hair/makeup trainings, and tech rehearsals may also occur on Saturdays for both productions. Performances occur on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons.
I don’t have anything prepared. Can I still audition?
You can, but bring something that you can read. Review it on the way to the auditions. Some audition forms include recommended pieces for auditioners to prepare. Some productions will provide options at check-in that auditioners can learn before it's their turn to audition.
How can I get the script or the sheet music for the show so I can prepare my audition?
Show specific details for preparing your audition are included in the audition notices (above).
What are the dates and times of the performances?
Specific details for each show are listed in the audition notice.
Do I have to be at the audition the whole time? Can I leave early?
While the audition process may not require the entire time posted, you need to stay until released from the audition; and we cannot guarantee the time that any actors will be released from the audition process, so we recommend clearing your schedule for the entire time frame. If this is not possible, please arrive as early as possible for the Audition dates and alert Stage Management of time constraints and the casting team will do their best to accommodate your schedule. However, please be aware that having to leave early from pre-auditions and/or callbacks could prevent casting for certain roles or entire productions.
If you require an accommodation, please submit your request three (3) business days in advance at https://www.ivc.edu/dsps/accommodations/community
