AP Art History
(10th-12th grade students)
The AP Art History course attempts a broad overview of the history of art, beginning with prehistoric art and ending with art of the 20th Century. Although the emphasis is on western art, other material from areas such as Africa, India, China, Japan, and pre-Columbian Americas will be included. The course is intended to provide students a familiarity with the development of art, its major movements and figures, its relationship to the historical period in which it was created, and to make their encounters with art more meaningful, comprehensible, and pleasurable. The curriculum follows that provided by most college survey texts and that outlined in the AP Art History Course Description Booklet. This course is the equivalent of two-semesters of entry-level college art history courses, and because time is limited, students will be expected to work independently, to be responsible for large amounts of reading and watching videos which may or may not be dealt with specifically in class, and to take the initiative in keeping up with or ahead of assignments.
