Elementary-Problem Solving

The Four-Step Problem-Solving Approach is a problem-solving strategy consisting of four steps: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) look back and review. This approach can be applied to all word problems at every level. The Four-Step Problem-Solving Approach helps students become stronger problem solvers by allowing them to discover best practices through trial and error. Over time, students will gain confidence in the problem-solving process.

This framework provides an alternative approach to working with behaviorally challenging students that focuses on empathizing with the students’ concern, sharing your concern, and collaboratively brainstorming a solution.
