Tips to Help Prepare Your Child for Pre-K
Starting Pre-K is an exciting milestone! Here are a few simple ways to help your child feel confident and ready for a successful school year:
Practice independence. Encourage your child to put on their own backpack, wash their hands, use the restroom independently, and open simple snack containers.
Establish a consistent routine. Begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up times a week or two before school starts so your child is well-rested.
Read together every day. Reading books builds language, vocabulary, and a love of learning.
Talk positively about school. Share your excitement and describe school as a fun place to learn, play, and make new friends.
Practice saying goodbye. Keep drop-offs short, positive, and confident. A cheerful hug, kiss, and "I'll see you after school!" helps children build confidence.
Encourage communication. Help your child practice using words to express their feelings, ask for help, and solve simple problems.
Develop self-help skills. Let your child practice cleaning up toys, throwing away their trash, and taking care of their belongings.
Practice sharing and taking turns. Playing games and spending time with other children helps build important social skills.
Label everything. Please label backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, jackets, and any extra clothing with your child's name.
Pack a change of clothes. Accidents happen! Please send a complete change of clothes in a labeled zip-top bag to keep at school.
Limit screen time before bed. A calming bedtime routine with books or quiet activities can help your child get a good night's sleep.
Be patient. Every child adjusts at their own pace. It's normal for the first few weeks to bring lots of emotions, and we're here to support your family every step of the way!
We can't wait to welcome your family and begin an amazing year of learning, growing, and making wonderful memories together!
