Keep Cadence Park Healthy!

As we do every year during cold and flu season (and especially so this year amidst the emergence of a new virus), please keep your children home from school when they are not feeling well.

Our approach to monitoring and responding to concerns specifically related to COVID-19 are outlined in Superintendent Walker's message to IUSD.

Please review these preventative measures to help our community stay healthy!

Prevention

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  • Stay home when you are sick.

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask. CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

For information about handwashing, see CDC’s Handwashing website

For information specific to healthcare, see CDC’s Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings

These are everyday habits that can help prevent the spread of several viruses. CDC does have specific guidance for travelers.

As a new and growing neighborhood, we are more dependent than ever upon your information to help us plan appropriately for the 2020-2021 school year. In order to ensure that we have appropriate staffing and capacity to accommodate all students who may remain in or move into our neighborhood, we need you to take a couple minutes this weekend to fill out our brief Intent to Return Survey, if you have not already done so.

Note: this survey needs to be completed once for each child you have in attendance at CPS.

ATTENTION ALL CPS PARENTS: RESIDENCY VERIFICATION

We are happy to share that we are updating our district practice for the Annual Residence Verification process. In an effort to honor parent time, we will be using the latest technology to verify residency by working with a third party software service.

The software will allow staff to conduct electronic residence verification for the district. The intent of the software is to:

  1. Significantly reduce parent time needed to satisfy annual residence verification.

  2. Conduct residence verification in an efficient manner.

We will be using this technology service for the Annual Residence Verification process starting February 13, 2020. The electronic residence verification process will provide residence verification for 80%-90% of IUSD families. This will leave approximately 10%-20% of families that will need to provide site staff with standard residence verification documents for a manual review.

Parents will receive notification beginning on February 28, 2020 regarding the status of their residence verification. If the student’s residence was verified electronically, parents will only need to submit an updated Residence Affidavit to the school office by March 13th. If the student’s residence was not verified electronically, parents will need to provide site staff with two proofs of residency along with an updated Residence Affidavit. The manual review of residency documents must be completed by March 27th. For your convenience, a list of standard residence verification documents can be found here.

If you would like more information on electronic residence verification, please review our electronic residence verification FAQ sheet here.

ATTENTION ALL CPS PARENTS: PERSPECTIVES REQUESTED

Dear Cadence Park Parents:

Please take a few minutes to complete our IUSD Annual Survey. This is the fifth year that every school in Irvine Unified will administer a climate survey. By making this an annual district-wide effort, we can begin to understand our most compelling needs and measure our growth over time.

Obtaining parent feedback regarding school climate and school-community relationships is critical for guiding our continuous improvement efforts. It also allows IUSD to dedicate resources through our Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) to ensure that we serve our students, support our staff, and remain connected to our communities. To learn more about the LCAP and the importance of the Annual Survey, please watch this three-minute informative video.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the IUSD Annual Survey! We know that this is a busy time of year and we appreciate you dedicating your time to provide us candid and constructive feedback. The survey will be open until February 7, 2020. All responses to this survey are anonymous and will be kept strictly confidential.

Sincerely,

Carlo Grasso

Principal

Notes:

                  • Please take send a screenshot or printout of the confirmation page to your child's classroom/homeroom teacher. The classes with the highest participation rate will receive a reward.

                  • Parents are encouraged to complete the survey one time for every child who attends school in IUSD

                  • Be sure to select "K-8 School" instead of elementary or middle.

What is the 2020 Census and Why Does it Matter?

As mandated by the Constitution, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide population count once every 10 years. Along with determining the number of congressional seats and electoral votes for each state, this data serves as the basis for allocating nearly $900 billion in federal funds for education, housing, public safety and other vital services.

Recognizing the importance of an accurate count for schools and communities, IUSD is among many organizations supporting awareness efforts in Irvine, in advance of the 2020 census this April. California is expected to lose nearly $2,000 per person in annual federal funding as a result of undercounting, which could have significant impacts for Irvine and California as a whole.

What You Need to Know (from census.gov):

· Your privacy matters. When you respond to the Census, your answers are kept anonymous. Answers are used only to produce statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau is bond by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential. The law ensures that your private information is never published and that your answers cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.

· There are three ways to respond to the Census. By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census and you will be given the option to respond online, by phone or by mail.

· Avoid scams. The Census Bureau will never send you unsolicited emails, ask for your social security number, bank account or credit card numbers, or for money or donations.

· Get involved. You can partner, spread the word, and/or work for the Census Bureau.

For more information and resources, visit census.gov.

Dear Parents,

During this season of giving, I would like to take a moment to say thank you and recognize the many generous families who have already made a donation to Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF). Your charitable gift supports all 41 schools and 36,000 students in Irvine, including ours! Funds raised through the Educational Excellence Fund make an impact in Cadence Park classrooms every day.

Please join me in thanking the families on our Cadence Park Honor Roll here: https://ipsf.net/honorroll. If your name is not yet on the list, there is still time! Your participation is important, a gift at any level makes a difference and is greatly appreciated!

It’s not too late to join me in becoming a supporter of IPSF. Please return the donation form you received in the mail or contribute online at www.ipsf.net/donate.

Thank you in advance for your support of IPSF – YOU and your generous support make it possible for our school to maintain educational excellence for your child. When we work together, every student wins!

Sincerely,

Carlo Grasso

Principal

P.S. Did you know that you impact can be doubled? Thanks to the matching grant from the City of Irvine, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar, which means that your gift of $50 becomes $100 toward your child's education!

Halloween

Halloween (10/31) is not a national or school holiday, but we do recognize that many of our students will participate to some extent in the opportunities for fun and revelry that this day presents. With this in mind and because it falls on a school day, students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school, should they desire to do so. Children who opt to come to school in costume are asked to observe the following guidelines:

• No masks

• No excessive face paint or gore

• No high heels

• No replica weapons

• No culturally insensitive otherwise offensive or inappropriate attire

Costumes must also be safe and comfortable enough to be worn for the entire day and still permit participation in regularly scheduled activities . Children who do not have a costume or do not wish to wear theirs to school might also opt for an outfit of orange and black that day.

Parking LOT GRAND RE-OPENING!

At long last, we anticipate the re-opening of both of our parking lots as early as Wednesday, 10/30. In anticipation of this development, we ask that all Cadence Park parents review the map below, which indicates the direction of traffic flow through the lots, as well as the intended purpose of each lot.

With respect to the main lot, parents are asked to 1) be mindful of pedestrians in the raised crosswalk area indicated in yellow below and 2) only turn right when exiting, in order to reduce congestion in intersections approaching our campus.

Finally, we ask all parents to:

  • model courtesy for fellow motorists and pedestrians in and around our school

  • walk or ride your bike to/from school if you live close enough and are old enough to do so

Lunchtime FUN!

Starting next week, students in grades 1-5 can look forward to exciting new activities brought to us by the City of Irvine Lunchtime Activities Program! Every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of the year, the Fun Bunch will come onto campus and facilitate sports, crafts and games for our elementary students.

This amazing program is being funded by our PTSA and was made possible by your generous donations to our fall pledge drive. Thank YOU, parents! We will be sure to share some pictures in the weeks to come on our Instagram account.

ASTRONOMY NIGHT

University High School’s Astronomy Club, in partnership with other high school’s clubs, will be hosting an Astronomy Night on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The event will occur from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Astronomers from UCI and NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) will speak about space-related topics. In addition, several telescopes will be available for observing the moon and other celestial bodies. Finally, a collection of activities (including building constellations with toothpicks and marshmallows and trivia) will be available.

The evening will begin in the UHS MPR but activities will be both inside the MPR (for activities that need light) and outside (for primarily telescope-related activities).

IPSF Giving Day - Turn Irvine Orange!

Wear orange on October 18 to show your support for educational excellence in Irvine. Please encourage your students, parents, and staff to rock their ORANGE to help us celebrate! Don’t forget to share your IPSF spirit and be sure to post your orange pics on social media. #SupportIPSF #TurnIrvineOrange

WHY OCTOBER 18?

On October 18, 1996, Irvine Public Schools Foundation was founded by a group of parents and community leaders to ensure that changes in state funding would not impact the quality of education that we value as a community. Continue their legacy and join the countless parents who have generously donated to IPSF over the past 23 years with a gift to the Educational Excellence Fund on IPSF Giving Day!

DOUBLE YOUR DONATION

All gifts to IPSF are doubled thanks to a matching grant from the City of Irvine. That means your $50 donation will put $100 into our schools!

Disaster Preparedness at CPS

On 10/17, our students and staff are participating in the Great California Shakeout, a State-wide drill intended to prepare residents for the inevitable large earthquake that both Northern and Southern California are overdue for. As part of our activities on campus today, students will practice their Drop, Cover and Hold routine, and then evacuate the buildings under the guidance of staff. From there, staff will break out into our Disaster Response Teams (First Aid, Search & Rescue, Student Reunification, etc.) to practice attending to the varied responsibilities required to ensure our students' well being in the immediate and longer-term aftermath of a major disaster.

Part of our ability to successfully provide for the students under our care will depend upon the preparedness and cooperation of our parent community. To that end, we wish to make you aware/remind you of the following:

1. Stay Connected: See information below about how we will communicate with you in the event of an emergency.

2. Understand Our Reunification Plan:

  • Students will only be released to a parent, guardian or contact listed in our database. Be sure that any adult who you may wish to pick up your child in the event that you cannot make it to school is added to your Parent Portal approved contacts list.

  • In order for us to release your child, we will need to see a photo ID of the Contact who arrives to pick him/her up.

  • Parents are directed to report ONLY to the check-in desk, which will be located adjacent to the child care building(see attached map), and not attempt to gain access to campus through any other areas. Once we verify your identity, we will send for your child, and you will meet him/her in the adjacent student pick-up area.

3. Be Prepared at Home: Click here for information about how you can ensure your family's safety and well-being for an extended period in the aftermath of a major disaster. For a more detailed plan for home preparedness, click here.

As part of Emergency Preparedness Month, we would like to remind our families that Staying Connected to IUSD during an emergency is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1.) Check your voicemail, text messages and email first for the most up-to-date information from the District. If you unsubscribed from school or District emails, you will not receive important updates during an emergency. To re-subscribe, email helpdesk@iusd.org.

2.) Check IUSD.org and your school website for alerts and updates.

3.) Follow and like us on social media for real-time updates

CLASS PLACEMENT UPDATE

We would like to thank our Puma families for your confidence and patience as we started the school year in a somewhat unconventional manner with respect to teacher assignment. After a few days of school, we feel that we now have a good enough read on our new students to create balanced classes that will result in an optimal learning environment for all.

Students in grades one through five ended the day today in the classroom where they will spend the rest of this year. That is where they should report to at the beginning of the day starting tomorrow, 8/27. By tomorrow morning, Parent Portal should be updated to reflect all changes made today.

We recognize that some of our students may have developed an affinity for particular teachers already, so we will need your support in responding in an encouraging and affirmative manner to any feedback from your children as they adjust to their new teacher’s personality and practices, as well as the presence or absence of their closer friends. Children are very attuned to the attitudes of their parents, and will adjust their approach to this new situation according to their parents’ reactions. More often than not, initial jitters and apprehension give way to a sense of community and comfort within a matter of days or weeks.

Great lengths were taken by Cadence Park staff members to create well-balanced, heterogeneous classes with respect to the following considerations:

· Special academic needs (GATE, SAI, ELL, etc.)

· Independence and personal responsibility

· Behavioral strengths and challenges

· Learning and teaching styles

· Citizenship and leadership

· Ratio of boys to girls

Any changes made to rosters after this point would impact this delicate balance and alter the dynamics of the grade level at large. As such, we do not plan to make any changes to teacher assignment. If, for some reason, your child is still struggling in her/his new classroom after the third week, you are welcome to contact her/his teacher and/or the Principal to discuss the situation at greater length.

Just as we in the adult world are expected to interface productively with varied personalities, so must our children learn to respond to people and situations with which they are not initially comfortable. Save for the rare, irreconcilable student-teacher or peer dynamic, our preference is to build capacity with our staff and students to ensure that a comparable and productive learning experience is enjoyed by all in attendance at Cadence Park.

First Week of School

Kindergarten & TK Teachers

Parents of students Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten can expect an email on Wednesday afternoon with an update regarding the class and session (early vs. late) to which their child has been assigned. Unlike our older students, these assignments will be final, and will reflect our best efforts to honor any requests that were made for early or late sessions. Any families who do not get assigned to their preferred session can be added to a wait list during the second week of school in case openings arise. More information about our Kindergarten programs will be provided at our Kindergarten Back to School Night on 8/22.

Elementary Class Assignment (1st-5th)

A primary focus of our first two weeks of school will be the process of community-building. Not until students feel safe, oriented, and engaged will they be in a place to open their minds and learn. This process will involve the engagement of all students by all teachers and peers in their grade level. To support this, we will not be creating final rosters and assigning teachers until the end of the first week of school for grades one through five. This will afford us a chance to get to know our students, observe social dynamics, determine basic proficiencies, and then go about the creation of balanced, heterogeneous classes.

Parents of students in grades one through five can log into the Parent Portal on Wednesday afternoon to see which teacher their child should report to on the first day of school. Students are asked to line up outside their teacher's door by 8:10 a.m.. Remember that this person may or may not end up being their final teacher assignment for the year. We expect to notify all parents of final rosters and teacher assignments by Tuesday, 8/27. Parents will then get a chance to meet and learn more about that teacher during Elementary Back to School Night on 9/5. For your convenience, you can click here to see where each teacher's classroom will be.

Middle School Classes

Similarly, our middle school students (grades 6-7) will spend the first two days with their homeroom classes and their grade level at large before commencing with their six-period schedule on the second week of school. Students are encouraged to wear cool, comfortable athletic clothing for the first day, as they will be participating in a variety of activities. Like our elementary families, middle school parents can find out their child's homeroom teacher this Wednesday afternoon. Students are asked to line up outside of this teacher's classroom by 8:25 a.m. on the first day of school. Parents will have the opportunity to meet all of their children's teachers at Middle School Back to School Night on 8/29.

COFFEE & COMMUNITY

All Puma Parents are invited to plan on connecting with one another as you say goodbye to your children on the first day of school. To support the acquaintance of new parents and the reunion of returning parents, our PTSA will be hosting a FREE coffee cart at the entrance to our school(across from the front office) from 7:45-8:45 on 8/22.

Times are a'CHANGIN

Please note the daily schedules for grades TK-8 below, as times have changed slihgtly from last year.

CadenceBellSchedule19-20_Final.pdf

IN and OUT

As we start the school year, students and parents are to be advised about the temporary closure of our parking lots as the construction crews complete the installation of solar carports on our campus. This project will reduce energy costs for IUSD while increasing our reliance upon renewable energy resources.

Please be aware of the following information and procedures related to this project:

  • Students can be dropped off along the curb anywhere on our block (indicated in green below), which will allow them to access campus without crossing a busy street or intersection.

  • Kindergarten and TK parents must park and escort their students to the classroom.

  • Elementary (1st-5th grade) parents are encouraged to drop and pickup your students along the blue curb illustrated in the map below. Parents may not park/leave their cars in this area, however.

  • Our school size has almost doubled since last year, so all families are encouraged to leave early and allow extra time in the morning-especially during the first week of school.

  • No matter how frustrating the impact may be, take comfort in knowing that this inconvenience is temporary, and we expect to have both lots open and accessible again by the end of October!

  • Model patience and respect for our students as you engage your community members on the road.

Arrive Safely at Cadence Park

Every year, traffic analysts from the City of Irvine study our communities and advise our students regarding the safest way to get to and from school via foot or bicycle. Please review the map below to ensure that you and your child know the best way to get from your home to campus each day. Note that the current route for Parasol Park residents may not seem like the quickest way to school, but that is because Cadence has not yet been turned over to the City of Irvine, and is thereby not subject to regulation and moitoring by City agencies. Be aware as well that per IUSD Board Policy, only children in grades 3 and above are allowed to ride bicycles to school.

Safe travels!

IPSF PRESENTS: PATS

This year, Cadence Park School received two grants from Irvine Public Schools Foundation's (IPSF) Innovative Grants Program! One is a Mega grant titled “Walls Down, World Up,” which will allow students to experience interdisciplinary learning through video production and 3D printing. The second is a Teaching grant titled “Plant it for the Planet,” which will utilize our school garden to enhance student learning opportunities across a variety of subjects.

Grants like this are made possible by IPSF thanks to the support of parents like you. Funds raised from the Parents Appreciating Teachers and Staff (PATS) campaign directly support teacher grants. PATS is an easy way to show our teachers, nurses, and administration how much we appreciate all that they do! For a small donation, IPSF provides our teachers and staff a certificate of appreciation, which includes a personal message from you and your student, along with a small gift as an expression of gratitude during National Teacher Appreciation Week in May.

To contribute to the PATS campaign and purchase your teacher a gift of appreciation, please click here.

IPSF has awarded over $1.5 million to teachers and counselors, benefitting over 200,000 students since the program’s inception. For more information about this year’s recipients, please visit: https://ipsf.net/news/ipsf-awards-200000-in-innovative-grants/.

Thank you for your support and appreciation of our school, our classrooms, and our teachers!

The LCAP survey will be available through Sunday, April 21.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Your engagement, partnership and support continue to enable IUSD to best serve our students.

Cadence Park parents are encouraged to participate in the 2019-20 LCAP Draft Plan survey, which is part of the 10-month Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) process. This interactive process helps IUSD identify annual goals, take action on those goals, and measure progress on academic achievement, school climate and parent engagement. Your input is critical to IUSD’s decision-making process and will help guide investments in the District’s priorities.

To best meet the needs of our school community, there are two different survey options available:

Option #1--Condensed Survey

ARE YOU READY FOR MORE?

Or have you had enough?

We need all Cadence Park families to complete a brief questionnaire this week to let us know if your children plan to return to Cadence Park School next year. This information will be used to plan our staffing for next year. Without good projections of next year's enrollment, we cannot ensure that we will have the appropriate number of classrooms and teachers ready to support your children in the fall. Thanks in advance for your timely completion of this requirement. (you are asked to complete the survey once for every child you have enrolled at our school)

Aladdin @ CPS?

Provided there is enough interest in participation, CPS students will have an opportunity to participate in a musical theater production of the Disney classic, Aladdin, this spring via the IPSF ACE program. In addition to needing enough student participants, this program will require the support of some parent volunteers.

If your child and/or you are interested in participating, please complete this survey by February 20th.

A LOT TO REMEMBER

In case you missed our previous announcements regarding student drop-off, we wish to remind you that the only safe and approved area for dropping off and picking up your students in grades 1-6 is the main (larger) parking lot at the front of the school. The smaller lot is intended for parents who must park to walk their children into Rainbow Rising and/or Kindergarten.

Be advised as well that this area will continue to be sporadically monitored by IPD. We appreciate your cooperation with ensuring the safety of our students and efficient circulation of cars through and around our campus.

CALLING ALL PUMAS!

Interested Pumas are invited to join CPS teacher Ms. Estrada as we participate in thisfun, county-wide spring running competition.

RESIDENCY VERIFICATION

Attention ALL IUSD PARENTS:

The Irvine Unified School District will once again require residency verification for all IUSD students enrolling for the 2019-20 school year. This process is an annual legal requirement in California and it helps our district ensure that all available resources are spent efficiently and effectively to the benefit of our Irvine families. Moreover, these additional steps will help provide a full and precise accounting of our student population as we review staffing for the coming year. By completing the required forms for each of your students, you will be making a formal declaration that your child lives within IUSD’s attendance boundaries. Hard copies are also available in our front office upon request.

All required documents must be sumbitted to the CPS office by March 1.

HOW'S IT GOING?

Please take a few minutes to complete our IUSD Annual Survey. This is the fourth year that every school in Irvine Unified will administer a climate survey. By making this an annual district-wide effort, we can begin to understand our most compelling needs and measure our growth over time.

Obtaining stakeholder feedback regarding school climate and school-community relationship is critical for guiding our continuous improvement efforts. The survey will be open from January 10, 2019 - February 10, 2019. All responses to this survey are anonymous and will be kept strictly confidential.

To bolster participation, we are going to reward the classes with the highest parent response rate. When done with the survey, please either email your child's teacher a screen shot of your confirmation or print and send in a copy with your child. Thanks for your time and ideas!

Thank you in advance for your support of IPSF – YOU make it possible for our schools to maintain educational excellence with your generous support. When we work together, every student wins!

L.E.A.P. with Parker the Puma at the drop off!

These lucky Pumas found that it pays to do the right thing this morning. Parker the Puma was on hand to greet all of our Pumas whose parents dropped them off at the front of the school, as requested. Thank you, students and parents, for keeping Cadence Park on the move!

IN and OUT

Please be reminded that students are NOT to be dropped off in the small parking lot. This is reserved for Kinder and Child Care drop off when parents have to park and walk their children into the buildings.

Students in grades 1-6 are to be dropped off along the curb in the main(larger) parking lot. This is the safest place to unload your students, there is staff supervision, and a covered walk way to get you to class warm and dry on rainy days.

Please note as well that if you turn right when exiting the parking lots, you can circle the block to exit via Theme, which allows you to skip the congestion at the stop signs and crosswalks in front of school.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING REMINDER:

A percentage of your Amazon purchases can support Cadence Park, with no additional cost to you. On your first visit to AmazonSmile smile.amazon.com, you need to select a charitable organization (Cadence Park K-8) to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. Amazon will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.

Professional SOCCER IN THE GREAT PARK!

Orange County Soccer Club, Irvine’s own pro soccer team (affiliated with new Major League Soccer franchise Los Angeles Football Club), is making history this season. They are hosting (and have their sights on winning) their third home playoff game at the city’s 5,000-seat Championship Soccer Stadium at Orange County Great Park this Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Phoenix Rising (featuring international soccer legend Didier Drogba). If they win this United Soccer League Western Conference Championship game, they advance to the national title game on Nov. 8 at 5pm at the Great Park – a game that will be broadcast on ESPN. The team is hoping to pack the house for what could be a proud moment in Irvine sports history. Tickets start at $9 when using IRVINE as a promo code here.

LAST CALL!

ACE ENROLLMENT ENDS THIS FRIDAY, 11/2

Please see flyer to the left for details about our first session of the Afterschool Classroom Enrichment Program, brought to you by IPSF. Classes are held right here at Cadence Park School and will begin next week!

In an effort to better promote, communicate and link students and families with the Irvine Unified School District’s mental health and wellness services and resources, representatives from the Mental Health and Wellness Team (School Counselors, Elementary Resource Counseling Specialists, Wellness Coordinators) developed the Speak Up, We Care campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to increase awareness of, access to, and use of resources that build positive mental health and wellness, which is an essential component to lifelong success.

A website has been created that supports the Speak Up, We Care campaign. Please click on this link for additional resources: www.iusd.org/WeCare On this website, you will find a 2-minute video encouraging IUSD students to Speak Up for themselves and others. You may want to watch the video with your child and have a conversation about the message.

· Start with an open-ended question such as: What do you think about the message in this video?

· If your child says that s/he cannot think of an adult s/he would go to, point out to your child that the video appears to be sending the message that the adults at the school care and want to connect. Give your child an opportunity to generate some solutions.

Each quarter, a new theme will be introduced. This quarter’s (September, October and November) Speak Up, We Care theme is Link Up. In encouraging students to Link Up, we want them to build connections, which are essential for lifelong happiness and success, become a part of their community, and have a sense of belonging.

What can you do to help your child Link Up?

· Encourage your child to participate in a school activity that interests him/her such as music, sports, or clubs.

· Consider joining community activities that interests your child such as the arts, sports, and volunteering.

· Talk with your child about adult resources on campus such as Elementary Resource Counseling Specialist, Guidance Assistant, School Nurse, School Counselor, Wellness Coordinator, School Psychologist, Project Success, Coach, and School Resource Officer.

PUMAS vs. COYOTES

As our neighborhood begins to fill in, the newest residents (you) will likely begin to encounter the older residents (coyotes) from time to time. Cohabitation is possible but requires some awareness and behavior modification by humans to ensure the safety of our students (and pets) and to discourage the presence of these animals in areas proximal to our houses and school.

Please take a moment to review the article to the right about a technique called "hazing," which has proven effective with coyotes, including during a sighting on campus early this morning.

KEEP IT MOVING!

In an effort to reduce traffic backups and allow all parents to drop their children in a timely manner each morning, we ask that you take a minte to review the map to the left.

Parents of students in grades 1-6 are asked to NOT drop their children off in the smaller parking lot, which is designated to accomodate Child Care and Kindergarten drop-offs. Instead, we ask that you proceed down to the main lot, where there is ample space for you to safely drop off your child along the curb in a supervised area WITHOUT contributing to traffic backup along Benchmark.

Exiting the lot to the right will also allow a more expeditious exit from the neighborhood via Cadence to Theme. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

A tremendous THANK YOU to all of the CP families who have already made generous donations to our first ever Pledge Drive. Although we are still short of our $20,000 goal, recent donations have suggested that there are still folks out there willing to give that maybe just ran out of time.

If this describes you, please send your donation via check (payable to Cadence Park PTSA) to school with your child by Friday, or click here to donate online tonight!

Please help us ensure that our PTSA can provide the level of programmatic support (equipment and experiences) for your children that they have targeted for the 2018-2019 school year.

Parent REPRESENTATIVES WANTED

SSC

School Site Council (SSC) is a participatory panel composed of parents, staff members, and the school principal. Presently, we are in need of three parent representatives for the 2018-2019 school year. It is a great way for parents to provide insights and learn more about the "ins and outs" of the school without a making a major time commitment. We work as a small team to outline our school goals and align them with district and state goals. There will be 3-4 meetings of 30-45 minutes apiece aligned with morning drop-off.

Please complete this form if you are interested.

Drop Off Reminders

  • Parents who drop their children off by car each morning are asked to proceed to the drop off lane of the main parking lot where it is safest to do so. Drop-offs in the smaller lot are discouraged, as this is intended for child care and kindergarten drop off only.

  • School starts at 8:15. Please have your students lined up on campus by 8:10 each day!

  • If your child is arriving late to school, please drop him/her off at the front office, not by child care.

  • Be aware that we now have a crossing guard on hand each day to assist students across the road at Modjeska x Benchmark.

  • See map below for more details.

CPS dropoff & pickup map.pdf

Pick Up Reminders

  • Parents are asked to stay clear of the main walkway during dismissal each day so that our teachers can bring their classes to the designated area for their grade level. (<-- see map)

  • Children in primary grades (1st-3rd) are not allowed to wait unattended on campus for their older siblings.

Late Lunch Drop Off

We discourage parents from regularly delivering lunch to their children, but if ever this must be done, we have set up a cart for you to place their lunch adjacent to the lunch area. Please do not proceed into the lunch area during school hours.

Lost & Found

This is now located in the lunch area, and can be accessed by students all day and by parents before and after school. Unclaimed clothing and personal items will be donated to charity at the end of each month.

"It was good..."

This three word response is usually what you get when asking a child how their day was at school. Here are some alternate conversation starters you might use to elicit a more insightful response and dialogue with your child about school.

#1. What was the best thing that happened at school today? (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?) #2. Tell me something that made you laugh today. #3. If you could choose who would you like to sit by in class? (Who would you NOT want to sit by in class? Why?) #4. Where is the coolest place at the school? #5. Tell me a weird word that you heard today. (Or something weird that someone said.) #6. If I called your teacher tonight what would she tell me about you? #7. How did you help somebody today? #8. How did somebody help you today? #9. Tell me one thing that you learned today. #10. When were you the happiest today? #11. When were you bored today? #12. If an alien spaceship came to your class and beamed up someone who would you want them to take? #13. Who would you like to play with at recess that you’ve never played with before? #14. Tell me something good that happened today. #15. What word did your teacher say most today? #16. What do you think you should do/learn more of at school? #17. What do you think you should do/learn less of at school? #18. Who in your class do you think you could be nicer to? #19. Where do you play the most at recess? #20. Who is the funniest person in your class? Why is he/she so funny? #21. What was your favorite part of lunch? #22. If you got to be the teacher tomorrow what would you do? #23. Is there anyone in your class that needs a time out? #24. If you could switch seats with anyone in the class who would you trade with? Why? #25. Tell me about three different times you used your computer today at school.

CLass PLACEMENT UPDATE

We would like to thank our Puma families for your confidence and patience as we started the school year in a somewhat unconventional manner with respect to teacher assignment. After seven days of school, we feel that we have a good enough read on our new students to create balanced classes that will result in an optimal learning environment for all.

We recognize that some of your students may have developed an affinity for particular teachers already, so we will need your support in responding in an encouraging and affirmative manner to any feedback from your children as they adjust to their new teacher’s personality and practices, as well as the presence or absence of their closer friends.

Please do not contact us to request a change of teacher next week. If, for some reason, your child is still struggling in their new classroom after the second week, you are welcome to contact his/her teacher and/or the Principal to discuss the situation at greater length.

To see which teacher your child has ultimately been assigned to, we are asking all parents to log into the Parent Portal sometime after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 8/31. For parents who are unable to access the internet or Parent Portal, feel free to stop by front of the office on Tuesday morning (9/4).

All students in grades 1-6 will continue to line up on the blacktop each morning behind their assigned teacher’s sign.

HOW TO STAY INFORMED

Please review the flyer below about how you as a parent can stay tuned in to the latest information from our school district. Currently, we keep parents and staff informed primarily through e-mail, phone calls, and our website. While these are effective ways to share general information, we believe that the most expedient and reliable way to contact our community in emergency situations is by text message. In order for us to contact you via text message, we need you to "opt-in" to this service first.

Should we encounter and actual emergency, Cadence Park School will send a text message as our first means of communication. We encourage you to support this capacity and preserve your ability to stay informed by enabling this texting feature and verifying that your correct mobile numbers are in our system. This feature will NOT be used for non-urgent reminders or bulletins.

It is easy to "opt-in" to receive text messages:

  • Text "Y" to 67587 from each wireless device you wish to receive texts on.

Not sure if you "opted-in" already?

  • No problem! You can never "opt-in" too many times.

Still have questions? If so, visit IUSD's Text Message Frequently Asked Questions page.

A COmmunity is Born!

This Thursday, we look forward to welcoming our students onto campus as we gather for the first time to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. We have all arrived here from different places with different experiences and expectations, but this week we will begin the process of discovering what we all have in common and what it means to be a Cadence Park Puma!

We encourage our parents and students to approach this new year in a new school with a sense of optimism and excitement about being part of a community like no other. To this end, we ask you to take a moment to read the details below about our first week.

Class Assignment

A primary focus of our first two weeks of school will be the process of community-building. Not until students feel safe, oriented, and engaged will they be in a place to open their minds and learn. This process will involve the engagement of all students by all teachers and peers in their grade level. To support this, we will not be creating rosters and assigning teachers until the end of the second week of school for grades one through six. This will afford us a chance to get to know our students, observe social dynamics, determine basic proficiencies, and then go about the creation of balanced, heterogeneous classes.

Parents of students in grades one through six can log into the Parent Portal on Wednesday afternoon to see which teacher their child should report to on the first day of school. These teachers will meet their students on the blacktop in the morning each day, and escort them to the classroom when the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m.. Remember that this person may or may not end up being their final teacher assignment for the year. We expect to notify all parents of final rosters and teacher assignments by Friday, 8/31. Parents will then get a chance to meet and learn more about that teacher during Back to School Night on 9/6. For your convenience, you can click here to see where each teacher's classroom will be.

Parents of students Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten can expect an email on Tuesday evening with an update regarding the class and session to which their child has been assigned. Unlike our older students, these assignments will be final, and will reflect our best efforts to honor any requests that were made for early or late sessions. Any families who do not get assigned to their preferred session can be added to a wait list during the second week of school in case openings arise.

Pickup & Drop Off

Our small opening enrollment will make it unusually easy for all students and parents to get in and out of the school at the beginning of the year. To support the safe and timely ingress and egress of our students, we have arranged the following routines for parents to pick up and drop off their children. Please click here to see the supporting map.

Be reminded that the first day of school we will be on our Modified Day Schedule, so students will get out a bit earlier than usual.

Questions & Concerns

If you have questions before the school year starts, please call our front office at (949) 404-1300 or email our School Support T.O.S.A., Lauren Sipelis.

After the first day of school, you may feel free to call or email the teacher to whom your child has been temporarily assigned.

Puma Cub Meet & Greet Appointments

If you have a child entering TK, K or 1st Grade this school year and have completed enrollment, you are asked to schedule a meet & greet appointment with one of our teachers. If you have already done so, then please reference this map, which will show you where to park and where to go for your appointment. Please note that our parking lots will be closed for construction this week (shown in red on map) so you will need to park along Benchmark (shown in blue on map) and walk toward the front office following the green arrows shown on the map. Be aware that much of the remainder of campus is still under construction and thereby not safe to be walking about, so please do not attempt to travel across campus.

If you have completed enrollment but have not yet scheduled an appointment, then please email the appropriate contacts shown below:

Cadence PARK PUMAS!

At long last, we have identified the mascot of our new school. It is with great honor and respect that we have chosen this apex predator to symbolize our school and students. This elusive animal is indigenous to the area, and is known for it's beauty, stealth, and power.

Also referred to as a Mountain Lion or Cougar, the Puma was once quite common throughout the Southwest, although their territory has been significantly challenged in recent decades by suburban sprawl. Although rarely seen even by avid outdoor enthusiasts, they have been known to make their way into neighborhoods when food is scarce. We look forward to learning and sharing more about this magnificent animal.

Mascot Contest

Future Cadence Park students and community members are encouraged to show their Puma Pride by joining us in designing logos for our school. If you have artistic talent, show us what you've come up with. Winning designs will be shared via school social media and utilized on future school publications.

Note as well that our school colors will be red, white and blue, in honor of the fine men and women of the Armed Services who once worked on this land when it was occupied by the United States Marine Corps.

We also invite students to help us come up with a name for our symbolic Puma Mascot, who will make sporadic appearances at major school events. If you have an idea about what we should call her (or him), click here!
