Purpose Statement:

The multiple purposes of homework include preparing students for upcoming lessons, checking for understanding to direct teacher’s instruction, practice, and processing and application of learned concepts.

A majority of homework assignments are classroom assignments that require additional time at home for completion. Time management strategies will determine the amount of work a student will need to complete at home.

Homework Expectations:

We expect our students to do their best job on their homework; it is to be done neatly. We expect students to complete their homework independently and only ask for help after they have given their best effort.

Homework will be checked daily. Late assignments will be expected to be turned in the next day. Late and missing work will impact effort grade. Homework is returned weekly in the child’s Friday folder.

Appropriate Parent/ Guardian Involvement:

Parent involvement should be limited to facilitating:

  1. Setting up a consistent organized place & schedule with proper materials/supplies

  2. Encourage, motivate and prompt your child when necessary

  3. Do not sit with child and do homework for him/her.

  4. If your child is practicing a skill, ask them to tell you which steps are easy, which are difficult and discuss a plan of action to get help with the difficult steps.

  5. Check for completion, accuracy, and neatness.

  6. Review student planner and teacher webpage for assignments, projects, tests, etc.

  7. Monitor child’s stress level & amount of time taken to complete all assigned work

  8. If your child has left an assignment at school, please check the teacher’s homepage for links or call a study buddy. *Not all assignments are available online

  9. If there is a legitimate reason why your child was unable to complete an assignment, please email your teacher stating the reason why it was not completed.

Informing Parents & Guardians:

The parents will be informed about homework expectations during Back to School Night. The homework will help determine ONLY the students’ work habits/effort grade, different from the child’s academic letter grade.

The parents will be informed about daily assignments through the child’s planner and teacher webpage.

When homework demands feel excessive, parents should do the following prior to contacting the classroom teacher:

  1. Remove all distractions such as tv, tablets, siblings, etc.

  2. Make sure they understand the directions and tasks to be performed

  3. Establish and follow a consistent schedule that honors the child’s bedtime

  4. Provide your child with a short break (such as setting a timer)

If these suggestions are implemented and homework still seems excessive, then contact the classroom teacher.

Homework and Absences

We will not penalize students for any missed work resulting from excused absences. Students will have the amount of days absent to make up any assignments missed.

Academic Breaks

We will not assign homework/projects over academic breaks and weekends.

Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday nights. It should take students approximately 40 minutes to complete homework each night, including studying for tests and planning/completing long-term projects, as well as silent reading. We try to give at least a week’s notice for all tests.

We look forward to working as a team with you in order to best meet the needs of your child. Thank you for all of your support!
