Exam Day Information

2022 AP Exam Dates: May 2nd - May 13th *** All AP exams will be in-person (paper/pencil/pen)

Students Taking 8:00 am Exams

  • Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays – students will report back to their 5th period class (if they don't have an afternoon exam).

  • Wednesdays & Fridays – students will report back to their 6th period class (if they don't have an afternoon exam).

  • Please eat before you arrive.

  • Students will check-in at the MPR or library at 7:30 am.

Students Taking 12:00 pm Exams

  • Students much check-in to their 3rd & 4th period classes

  • Please release students at 11:15 am from class for lunch

  • The cafeteria will be open from 11:15 am – 11:40 am for students to eat lunch if they have a 12:00 pm exam.

  • Students will check-in at the MPR or library at 11:45 am.

For All AP Exams

  • Students will not be dismissed until an exam has officially ended; do not ask the testing proctors to leave early if you finish before the end of the exam.

  • If you play a sport or have a job, it is your responsibility to inform your coach or employer of your AP Exam obligation, and arrangements should be made accordingly.


You should bring the following items to the exam room

  • Your student ID card, California driver’s license or a US Passport (YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED INTO THE TESTING ROOM WITHOUT THE APPROPRIATE ID).

  • AP ID Labels!

    • You will receive your ID Labels when arriving at your first exam.

    • If you are taking more than one exam, bring these labels to all of your exams!

  • Several sharpened No. 2 pencils (with erasers) for all multiple-choice answer sheets. Mechanical pencils are not allowed .

  • Pens with black or dark blue ink for completing areas on the exam booklet covers and for free-response questions in most exams.

  • Pencil bags are not allowed. Use a transparent or ziploc bag.

  • Up to two calculators with the necessary capabilities if you are taking a Biology, Calculus AB/BC, Chemistry, Physics 1, Physics C, or Statistics Exam. Calculators may not be shared. (Visit the College Board website to learn more about the calculator policy for each of these exams, and for a list of authorized calculators.)

  • A ruler or straight edge if you are taking an AP Physics Exam


You should NOT bring the following to the exam room

  • Cell phones, Smart watches, PDAs, MP3 players, email/messaging devices, or any other electronic or communication devices. Leave these items in your locker or at home! (These items are also not permitted during the break).

  • If you do bring your cell phone, it must be turned off and checked in before you enter the testing room. You will be able to pick it up after you have been dismissed from the exam. Students WILL NOT be able to access their cell phones or electronic devices during the break.

  • Books, compasses, colored pencils*, correction fluid, dictionaries, highlighters*, or notes.

  • Rulers and straightedges (except as noted above).

  • Scratch paper (notes can be made on portions of the exam booklets).

  • Watches that beep or have an alarm.

  • Portable listening* or recording devices (even with headphones) or photographic equipment.

  • Clothing with subject-related information.


You are required to abide by the policies of both the College Board and school during the exam period. Any misconduct will be reported and could jeopardize your AP Exam grade. If you decide not to take an exam, please inform us as soon as possible so we can make a note of it.


Get a good night’s rest before your exam, and eat a nutritious breakfast. If you bring a water, it must be clear without any labels on it. It is advisable to bring a sweater, in case the room temperature is below your comfort level.

Late/Make-up Exam Information

  • Students may only test in the make-up window (5/17 - 5/20) due to a conflict with another exam, conflict with a school event (CIF), a family emergency, or a doctor’s note if ill during the original exam. If you are scheduled to take Chemistry and Spanish Literature at the same time, Chemistry will be the make-up exam. If you are scheduled to take Microeconomics and Art History at the same time, Microeconomics will be the make-up exam. If you are scheduled to take Spanish Language and Chinese Language at the same time, Spanish Language will be the make-up exam. Ordering an AP Exam When , Where, How

October 18 - Nov 1 (Uni and IUSD students)

AP exams for UNI students are purchased through the UNI Webstore for $105/exam + credit card service fee starting Oct. 18th.

  • Qualified Free and Reduced Lunch Students through IUSD Nutrition Services ($53/exam) Click HERE to access the application and additional information. Please show your "award letter" to Mrs. Gatlin or at the SAC window to Mrs. Jan. All reduced fee exams need to be purchased at the SAC window.

  • Late AP Exam Registration. If you missed the Oct. 18 - Nov. 1 window, you can purchase your exam Feb. 22 - 28 for an additional $40 (This is what College Board Charges). You may purchase on the Uni webstore or at the SAC window (first window next to the front office door) from 8:00am - 4:00pm. (On Feb. 23rd, the SAC will be closed during lunch).

  • SENIORS! If you are taking a second semester Spring only class (e.g. U.S. Gov't/Poli or Macro), you can purchase your exam from Feb. 22-28 without a late fee.

  • ***NOTE if you are self studying for an exam (meaning you are not taking the AP Class at UNI) - please contact Mrs. Gatlin at angelagatlin@iusd.org and ask for an EXAM ONLY join code AFTER exam is purchased. UNI cannot order you an exam without the student adding the code to their College Board Account. You can create an account at apstudents.collegeboard.org

Non-IUSD Students

Ordering an AP Exam When , Where, How

October 18 - Nov 1

Purchase at the Student Activity Center (first window next to the front office doors). Bring student School ID and payment in cash or credit card. Parents and guardians may purchase for their student(s), but must bring a copy of student's school ID card.

  • ***Once you have already purchased an exam(s), then click here for the Exam Only Join Code. UNI cannot order you an exam without you adding the code to your College Board Account. You can create an account at apstudents.collegeboard.org deadline to enter join codes is November 1st.

  • Late Registration Test are $155 + $40 late fee.

  • CLOSED exams to non-IUSD students are: Music Theory, Studio Art, Chinese Language & Culture, Spanish Language & Culture and Spanish Literature & Culture.

Benefits of Earning a Passing Score

AP exams can give a student college credit and/or assist with college course placement.

  • Points/credits toward degree requirements

  • Bypass introductory courses; start in a higher level course

  • Fulfill general education requirements

  • Additional time for a double major, study abroad, or early graduation


All AP exams are graded on a 5-point scale.

3 is typically considered to be a passing score:

  • 5 = extremely qualified

  • 4 = well qualified

  • 3 = qualified

  • 2 = possibly qualified

  • 1 = not qualified

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I have to take the AP Exam? No, AP Exams are not mandatory and will not affect your grade in high school.

  2. Do I have to have a College Board Account to take an AP Exam? YES!!!! There is no way UNI can order you an exam unless you have a student account. Go to apstudents.collegeboard.org

  3. Does my AP Exam count as college credits? Possibly. It depends on the college you would like to go to. Please check with your college of choice

  4. Can I choose a different date or time to take my exam? No, all tests are given at the same date and time world wide. College Board creates the schedule and we have to follow it.

  5. Can I take an exam for a class that I am not enrolled in? YES (except for world language & music theory exams). After you purchase the test you must get an "EXAM ONLY" join code and enter it in your College Board account. Email your receipt to angelagatlin@iusd.org to get your EXAM ONLY join code.

  6. Can I take an exam at another school? YES. Please look at the above information "AP Exams offered at other IUSD schools"

  7. I have 2 exams at the exact same time. What do I do? Contact Mrs. Gatlin at University High School and she can help you take the test at a later date. angelagatlin@iusd.org

  8. Can I take 2 tests on the same day? Yes. As long as they are not at the same time AND they are at the same location. There is no way that you can take a test in the morning at one school and make it in time to take an afternoon exam at another school.

  9. If I am not prepared, can I choose to take the test at a later time? No

  10. Can I take a later exam if I have a conflict, like a championship game scheduled? Yes, but you will have to make arrangements with Mrs. Gatlin before Feb. 28th.

  11. What if I am really sick on exam day? Please contact Mrs. Gatlin immediately. You can take the exam at a later date with proof of a Doctor's note

  12. Are there refunds? Partially. College Board charges $40 for any canceled exams. IUSD is offering refunds minus the $40 up until February 28th. After Feb. 28th no refunds will be issued. A refund form will be available to fill out starting in January.

              1. IF you have purchased an AP exam and you want to refund it prior to November 8th, this will be the only time to receive a full refund. You MUST email Mrs. Gatlin by November 8th.

  13. How long are the exams? Most exams will be between 4 - 4 1/2 hours from check in time. This time includes check in, directions, collection of material and a break.

  14. IUSD charges more for the exams than College Board charges, where does the money go? The additional funds cover the cost of hiring proctors, equipment and supplies for the exam AND it goes back to the AP student in the form of teacher training, technology in the classroom, supplies in the classroom , etc.
