Google Classroom is an innovative tool that allows for students and teachers to maximize the capabilities to integrate the creative and collaborative tools of the Google Suite for Education platform. Teachers are able to create Google Docs that can be shared, copied and collaborated on by integrating the Classroom platform. The platform is designed for teachers to share four different types of posts:

Assignment - A post that requires a students participation, whether that is simply to say they completed watching a video or using Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides to complete a creative activity. These types of assignments as well as assessments and quizzes will fall under the "Assignment" type Classroom post. Students need to remember to click the "Turn In" button and make sure their materials are attached (if any).

Question - These posts also require the attention of the students and they will need to submit the answer through the post. Questions can either be "short answer" or "multiple choice" and may also require that students respond to each other (this is a permission that needs to be set by the teacher).

Material - These post are simply to provide information to the student and DO NOT require any action on the part of the student. Many times these posts are used to attach syllabuses, rubrics, class documents and previously taught lessons.

Announcement - These posts are only found in the "Stream" section of the classroom and are general used for making quick announcements or asking general questions. In most cases they don't require an action from the student.

The Classroom platform is broken down into three sections where students can find all the materials, resources and assignments they will need for the Classroom experience.

Stream - This is the landing page where students will go when first entering the Classroom. This contains all the posts that were made in chronological order with the most recent at the top. You can also find announcements made by either the teacher or other students (if permitted). This is a quick way to find that most recent assignment given.

Classwork - This section is a more organized view of the coursework. All actionable items will be found on this page. If the teacher is using topics, posts will be broken down by those. You can view them by topic by clicking one of the topics to the left of the assignments. It needs to be noted that when students first click a post it will open with a preview, they should then click "View Assignment" to complete the post.

People - This is just a list of the teachers and students in their classroom.

Google Classroom is a closed environment in which students are only able to communicate with others in the Classroom. Generally all communication, collaboration and sharing happens within the students and teachers of the classroom. Students can have three different types of communication permission based on the setting implemented by the teacher.

Students can post and comment - This is the most open setting and allow for students to comment to others in their class as well as create announcement posts in the "Stream" section of the Classroom. General this setting is not used for the reason of being able to create posts that can be seen by all the students in the class.

Students can comment - This setting allows students to post replies to teacher and students comments as well as post comments to the class in assignment, question, material and announcement posts.

Students can only comment to teacher (also "muted" students) - This setting blocks students from being able to directly reply or comment to other students. They can still submit responses and read other students answers to question type post, they just won't be able to reply. Muted is a student by student setting and not a general setting for the entire Classroom.
