Q: How are the Top 50 employers calculated?
A: The top 50 employers are calculated using the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, which collects data based on the location of the job.
EX: If IUP has 500 employees living in Indiana County and 400 living in Cambria, Westmoreland, and Clearfield Counties, but H&W Global has 750 employees that all live in Indiana County, IUP will be ranked higher on the list (total 900 vs total 750).
Q: How are college students calculated in the county profiles?
A: The data from CWIA comes from the Census.gov website. They use the most recent aggregate data (a 5-year estimate, which is more accurate). Surveys ask individuals where they reside for the majority of the year. Most college students will answer for where they are attending school. If I live in Armstrong County, but attend Slippery Rock and live on-campus, I will be counted in Butler County's numbers. If I live in Armstrong County, but commute to IUP, I will be counted in Armstrong County's numbers.
The data is slightly skewed based on how CWIA represents it. I want to note that the Workstats data shows the population breakdown as percentages of a whole. For a county like Armstrong without a traditional 4-year college, the 18-24 number will always be slightly lagging compared to other counties with one. Comparing the 0-17 vs. 18-24 for Census data years 2023, 2022, and 2019 (I wanted to look pre-covid), the numbers are only decreasing by approximately 100 people per year, which I believe is accurately reflected based on the overall decrease in population.
The bottom line is that the data represents the split in age group, not the number of people that are staying in the area after high school graduation.
