Steps to Becoming a Tutor/Volunteer

Please note that the State of PA requires tutors to have a Bachelor’s Degree. Tutor Assistants and other volunteers do not require a degree.

Step 1: Please complete the AppliTrack application on the LIU12 website. The Job ID# is 672 (Literacy Council Volunteers). Choose “Franklin” for your area of service.  Here is the Link to the application: https://www.applitrack.com/lincoln12/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Volunteers

Step 2: The State of PA requires all volunteers working with children and at risk adults to provide background checks. This is also a part of the AppliTrack application process. If you don’t have a digital copy of the background checks, your original copies can be scanned and uploaded to your application here in the FCLC office for your convenience. Please note the following:

PA STATE CHECKS:

If an applicant needs to acquire/renew background checks:

PA State Criminal Background and PA State Child Abuse Background checks are free of charge for Volunteers (see Instruction Page in the AppliTrack application for more information on completing these checks).

FBI CHECKS:

If an applicant has resided in PA for over 10 years, an FBI check isn’t required, and the applicant will be asked to sign a waiver. The waiver can be signed during the online application process.

If an applicant has not been a PA State resident for 10+ years, an FBI Fingerprint background check is required. There is a fee for this check. This is a non-refundable fee and is not reimbursed by the FCLC/LIU12. Applicants are responsible for this charge.

Step 3: Please set up an appointment for Orientation. During the orientation, you will be given a more in-depth overview of the program and receive a new tutor packet with helpful information. This meeting may last about an hour to an hour and a half. (Note: interested parties may schedule an information session with the Program Coordinator prior to applying to volunteer).

Step 4:  Once The FCLC Coordinator requests an account for you, an email will be sent to you from PA Adult Education Resources with instruction. In the PD Portal, you will be required to complete 8 online tutor trainings within an allotted time frame. Each of these modules takes approximately 1 hour, and will need an 80% or higher on the end of module quiz in order to receive its corresponding certificate. Once a module is completed, please provide the FCLC office with a copy of the certificate and we will add these to your new tutor file. You will have 8 weeks to complete these modules. Create an account on the Pennsylvania Adult Education Resources website (http://pdportal.paadultedresources.org/learn/signin)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer Tutors/Substitute Tutors

This is the most rewarding way to get involved at the FCLC; however, it does come with a commitment of about 5-6 hours a week. This position also requires initial and ongoing training so that we can provide the best service for our students that we can (PA Dept of Education requires it). See our “How to Become a Tutor or Volunteer” page and video for more information.

Classroom Aides

Co-Tutors and Classroom Aides can work in either a tutor group or as an assistant to a larger group with an instructor. A high school diploma (or equivalency) is required for this position.

Advisory Board Members/Committee Members

Advisory board members assist with community outreach, public awareness, fundraising planning and events, and much more. Members would need to be available for monthly board meetings and be willing to support FCLC efforts in the community.

Community Class Instructor or Presenter

Our goal is to help not only our clients, but the Franklin County Community as a whole. People who would like to get involved in instructing short term community projects (ex. Teaching monthly basic computer and internet skills, teaching job interviewing or life skills seminars, etc.) would only need a H.S. diploma and a working knowledge of the subject they are seeking to assist us with.

ESL/ELL Conversation Group Mediator

Those interested in supporting students and community members who want to practice and improve their English speaking abilities only need a High School diploma and 2 free hours per week.

Advocates

Everyone can help us advocate for Adult Education! Help us connect with legislators and representatives to bring the impact of and need of funding for adult education to these influential decision makers by making phone calls, writing letters, and attending community events to highlight the needs of our learners adn their families.
