I am extremely excited to be part of the curriculum team at Intermediate Unit 1! I have been fortunate to gain a diverse and well-rounded experience in mathematics education by working in a variety of roles in different settings. Most recently, I served as an assistant principal at West Allegheny High School, where I discovered my passion leading professional development and providing instructional feedback to help educators better meet the needs of today’s students. Before this, I was a math teacher for nine years. My experience includes teaching grades 6 through 8 at West Allegheny Middle School and Virginia Beach Middle School. I also worked at Pittsburgh Brashear High School as a student teacher. I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Allegheny College, a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Pittsburgh, a Principal’s Certification from Point Park, and a National Board Teaching Certification in Mathematics. My love for mathematics education combined with my unceasing desire to push the practice of myself and other educators makes the position of curriculum specialist a perfect fit for me!
I believe in an inquiry-based approach to teaching mathematics, where students can explore ideas and discover connections that lead to a deeper conceptual understanding. Today’s students deserve a mathematics education that not only teaches them the grade-level topics they are required to learn, but the skills they need to be successful outside of the classroom. Mathematics should help teach students how to persevere through rigorous problems, think critically about a topic, collaborate with others, justify their reasoning, critique the reasoning of others, and use technology to push their understanding. The potential to learn mathematics lies within everyone, and it is our responsibility as educators to foster that potential so that all students may grow.
