I am a junior at IUPUI in the school of Health and Human Sciences on a Pre-PA track. I chose health sciences as my major because I felt as if this major would be the best to prepare me for PA school.
As a team member, I bring great communication and understanding to the team. I am open to new ideas and consider every team member's opinion before making a decision. I am a great leader as well. In a team setting, I tend to stick out and lead the group to help complete the tasks asked of us.
Riley Guild Service Project: I created a service project with a few classmates and created a fundraiser within the community to raise money for Riley Guild, an organization within Riley Children's Hospital that is involved with purchasing toys for children to have while they are at the hospital for an extended period of time. This experience taught me how to create a project with peers with a similar idea of mine, and doing it through community outreach.
IUPUI Honors College: At IUPUI, I have done 10 hours of volunteering for the Honors College per year. I have enjoyed volunteering at local food pantries which has broadened my ideas regarding poverty and food insecurity problems in Indianapolis.
Patient Care Technician at St. Vincent Ascension: As I have offered patient care to members of my community, I have learned how to work as a team, collaborating with nurses and other technicians on how to solve problems regarding our patients. While working in this setting I am actively engaged with the health of others and am learning career specific material by asking questions to other healthcare workers around me.
My skills: Up to this point, from past experiences I would say that my skills are teamwork, communication, reliability, and my ability to adapt to a fast paced environment. Throughout the year, I have been able to master the PCR and genotyping protocols. My team can rely on me to do PCR for any DNA, and to run a gel electrophoresis to confirm or deny their results.
Shadowing: This year, I was able to shadow a Physician Assistant (PA) at IU University Hospital. Being able to learn about what a typical day as a PA looks like was beneficial for my career development and confirmed my career aspirations.
