Complete assigned training and reading specific to professionalism and ethics in medical and healthcare training and practice.
I have been reading assigned documents and will be working on an annotated bibliography to document everything I have read.
Complete assigned tasks by deadlines.
I completed by Literature Review project by the LHSI showcase deadline with high quality work.
Observe relevant professionals in academic and healthcare settings to identify and reflect on ethical behavior and skills.
I was able to shadow family medicine residents to identify and reflect on their work and behavior.
Speaking to and shadowing medical residents and other healthcare practitioners to reflect on the identify how my prior knowledge connects to new concepts and ideas.
I was able to ask questions to medical residents to confirm if my previous knowledge would have led to correct diagnosis or reading of vital charts.
Writing and discussing reflections, such as identifying and analyzing ethical decision making and professionalism seen in healthcare settings.
I will be working on an annotated bibliography to discuss and document all readings I have done.
Identifying future internship goals that will allow me to expand my knowledge, skills, and perspectives of working in academic healthcare settings.
While shadowing medical residents, I identified qualities or skills that would benefit me in my future career and my next step is to utilize those skills in the workplace.
Meetings in-person and online with my supervisor to go over what I have learned or any questions I have run into.
I attend biweekly meetings with my supervisor to reflect on what I have learned or any questions I may have on my work.
Work with designated medical school librarians and use existing training to learn methods of effective searches, citations, and other academic resources.
Regularly discuss my supervisor's research, projects, and academic activities related to my internship, including setting reasonable timelines, goals, and tracking mechanisms to check the progress on projects.
My biweekly meetings with my supervisor holds me accountable to finish my assigned readings so that we are able to discuss them.
My current academic goals are to finish my undergraduate and graduate programs at IUPUI. I am still undecided between medical school or a Ph.D. program in engineering.
I am interested in attending medical school for child and adolescent psychiatry. I have found that I enjoy working with children through my years of coaching and tutoring, thus wanting to go into a field where I am able to interact with them. I was the secretary of Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) in high school, a club that promotes mental health and wellness which began my passion for mental health. Combining my likes for mental health and working with children, I searched for a career field that would fulfill both things and landed on child and adolescent psychiatry.
If I pursue the Ph.D. program in engineering, I would like to focus on neural engineering. This would give me an opportunity to research topics like neurodegenerative disorders. I chose to study engineering as a "backup plan" in case I decided that I was not interested in clinical care. I wanted to stay in a field where I could work with my passions and choose biomedical engineering. Even though I may not be in a hospital doing in-patient or out-patient care, I am still able to make an impact on people's lives by researching and developing healthcare.
I am confident that one of these two career goals fits me well due to my passion for neuroscience, medicine, and technology. I want to stay in a field where I am able to make a positive impact on people's health whether that is by direct treatment or research. One big thing I need to do to succeed is apply to medical or graduate school. If I am applying to medical school, I will need more volunteer or shadowing hours at hospitals or clinics. Both medical school and graduate school will require high grades so I must continue to maintain my grades. During winter break I had the opportunity to shadow residents and doctors at the IU Family Medicine clinic downtown. I was able to follow the doctors to their appointments and have the opportunity to talk to the patients. I asked questions of the residents and the attendees to learn more about their interests, education, medical school, and why they chose clinical care. During the spring, I coordinated times with my supervisor to speak to researchers. This allowed me to explore the research and graduate school side of my future goals.
For the summer of 2023, I plan on returning to Japan to spend time with my family so I will not be involved in any internships or research programs. I may see if my family members there have connections to doctors or engineers that I could shadow, thus allowing me to weigh the option of working in Japan. In regard to the rest of my time at IUPUI, I am looking for an engineering internship or research position. I am planning to apply for some MURI research programs that align with my interests or ask the BME faculty if there are any research positions open during the academic year.
Overall, my goals on my LHSI application and now haven't changed much. I am interested in psychiatry and neural engineering, still unable to decide between the two. My interest in pharmacology still has not been explored in depth. I am beginning to eliminate the pharmacy aspect and steering more toward the medical school or graduate school goal.
