Learn more about me!
I'm currently a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor in mathematics. My field of study, Biomedical Engineering, combines engineering with medicine and biology concepts for healthcare purposes. After graduation, I want to try to do a master’s in Biomedical Engineering because I believe that it will help me get into a company that I am interested in working with such as Roche and Eli Lilly and Company. Also, I feel like if I have a master’s then I will have a competitive edge compared to other students. I believe obtaining my master’s will give me more job security.
Since I was little, I have always wanted to do an engineering-related career, and in these past few years, I realized that I love biology, and I would love to do engineering mixed with some sort of medical involvement. I want to increase my professional knowledge and understanding during these 4 years at IUPUI.
As a team member, I have communication, problem-solving, and responsibility skills. When mentioning communication skills, I’m referring to the oral, written, and visual aspects. I have learned how much an individual can gain through effective communication methods. I believe that when in confusion or doubt, it's best to respectively communicate with others because everyone has different views and opinions that can help resolve an issue. Along with that, problem-solving is a key skill that allows an individual to gain control over the environment and/or situation. I tend to problem solve by writing in my journal. I think of all the possible solutions, and then I write pros and cons to each of the solutions to help me eliminate choices, and this allows me to find a better solution. Responsibility helps individuals learn how to manage time to accomplish a certain goal or task. When I'm given multiple tasks, I prefer to create a to-do list because it helps me stay organized. I like to number by list by prioritizing certain tasks that need the most urgency. My previous experiences have taught me that a team member is someone that helps the group complete tasks, and achieve goals as a whole. It is critical that everyone is collaborating as a team.
At IUPUI, I volunteered with the Regatta event this past fall which is a half-mile canoe relay competition including teams of up to six IUPUI students, faculty, staff, and alumni. During the Regatta practice day, I volunteered to make sure that the students that came to practice were riding the canoe following the directions. For example, I made sure that the canoes were not hitting the edges which would damage the canoes. Also, I kept track of the canoe’s being always on the rider’s left side. I did some of this volunteering by hand gestures to the canoe riders with little verbal explanation. This was an amazing experience for me because I got a chance to use my communication skills to help navigate how the canoe race is going is going to work. Along with that, being a problem solver is a key strength to have which will help me in the internship site. If I’m able to problem solve, then that means I can think critically, analyze, and evaluate my problems. My best example would be when balancing out my coursework so that I don’t focus too much on one class while forgetting about the others. My solution to this issue was to purchase a planner to organize my coursework and tests that I had for each class. I wrote down key assignments that needed to be completed for each day. I realized that every problem has a solution, I just had to find the solution that will best fit me.
Over this year, I definitely feel like my time management skills improved. I used to procrastinate on completing assignments for courses, but I now use a planner to write due dates a week ahead, so I can plan accordingly. I typically like to put a checkmark once I get a task completed. in my planner. Doing this makes me feel accomplished, and good about myself. Along with that, it helps reduce my stress, and it allows me to make sure that I don't have too many assignments and projects to finish in one day.
