Cytotechnology is the study of cells and identifying cancer cells among healthy ones. It is a lab driven field which is part of why I was interested in it. I also love learning about the human body which is vital to this major. I have always known that I wanted to work in the world of health science and medicine. In the past couple of years I have tried to identify a few specific careers that would interest me. I love doing research because I am able to contribute to a bigger picture. I also value having human interactions with the people that I am helping. I had the opportunity to shadow a dentist and attended IU's dental day program which both guided me toward my decision of wanting to become a dentist. I hope that this internship and the rest of my undergraduate career will allow me to gain a better understanding of what I want to pursue. Along with joining this program at IUPUI, I am also an honors college mentor in the honors college. I am a member of the Pre-Dental Club, Riley Dance Marathon, and will join the residence and housing organization in the fall.
I am committed to the team and ready to listen to everyone’s ideas and input. I am willing to help others and communicate with them. Another important aspect of teamwork is being reliable and responsible which are both things I am. Through the couple of experiences that I have had in the past, I have been able to practice teamwork. When I was a part of the attendance staff at Fishers High School, I was part of a bigger team which was the office staff. We all had to work together to make sure everything was properly finished. I worked with the guidance staff, deans office, and principals.
My experience as an office administrator working at Fishers High School has developed my strong interpersonal communication skills along with a tireless work ethic. I worked at my own desk taking voicemails from students’ parents, emailing teachers, and entering data into the Skyward application. There was always more work to be done and I was eager to start the next day’s tasks early. Although I worked independently on each of my tasks, I still collaborated with my coworkers to split up the tasks and figure out what needed to be accomplished for the day. Additionally, working in the attendance office in a school with thousands of kids has proven my resilience, organizational skills, and time management.
I have volunteered at Eskenazi health as a freshman and sophomore in high school. My experiences have ranged across many different departments including the ER, operating room, and NICU. Each department had different needs to attend to, in the ER I attended to patients’ every day needs by bringing them water and keeping their surroundings clean. In the operating room floor, it was my job to retrieve paperwork and observe the procedures. I quickly adapted to each area and was always eager to learn how the departments ran. With each interaction, I developed the mindset of wanting to help someone and excited to learn how I could. My time as a volunteer taught me my desire to learn, gratitude, and perseverance.
To become more involved with my time at IUPUI honors college, I became an honors peer mentor. I worked with freshman to help them adjust to college life and all it entails. It was a gratifying experience to see the difference I made in someone else's life and their ability to adjust. I was also able to develop better relationships with my peers and see how they approached their mentees. It was helpful to see what worked for others and how I could use it in my own meetings with my mentees. I am continuing the program next fall! As an honors peer mentor, I have learned proper communication, problem solving, and timeliness.
Through the experiences I have had I know that I really like working with others. Interacting with patients while volunteering at Eskenazi was something I enjoyed. I also liked talking with the students and other staff members when I worked at the attendance office. I have a few lab skills from taking biology and chemistry lab. I know how to pipette and make dilutions. I am excited to increase my lab skills through this internship.
