Hi, I'm Sarah! I am majoring in Biology with minors in Spanish and Liberal Arts Perspectives on Culture and Health. My internship is focused on improving caregiver interaction with the healthcare system in Pediatric Oncology.
Hospice Direct Care Volunteer
In January of 2022, I began the process of becoming a Direct Care Volunteer for Kindred Hospice. I started seeing my first patient in February. I visited her every week for around an hour until she passed away in June. During these visits, I would sit and chat with my patient and provide companionship. I am also able to help with food preparation when needed. I will start visiting two new patient on October 7th. This volunteer work has taught me to better listen to others. I have learned to tune into my patient and watch for any differences in needs or pain they might have. I have also learned to just be present with my patient.
Biology K101 TA
Last semester, I completed an internship with Dr. Kathleen Marrs. This internship started after initiating a conversation about the language used around disability. Dr. Marrs asked me to work with her to create a new Canvas page for the Biology 101 class. Through this, I learned how to better communicate through writing and face-to-face meetings with Dr. Marrs. I also learned how to present such information with the honors showcase in which I created a poster and presented the finished project. In this showcase, I discussed my work with many different students and faculty.
In my volunteer and internship work, I enjoy a wide array of tasks. I really enjoy more hands-on experience and experiences like the writing I did for Dr. Marrs.
Through my hospice experience, I have been able to learn about remote communication. After each visit, I fill out a form on what I did with my patient and how they seemed to be doing. This helps the entire team understand what is going on with the patient and what can be done to help. I also immediately notify my volunteer manager whenever a patient reports pain or discomfort. This is very important for the patient's wellbeing and being dependable in quickly reporting the situation is absolutely necessary.
