About Me
I am currently a junior majoring in Neuroscience and am on the pre-med track. Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates aspects of biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and more. I hope that my studies will allow me to be a more well-rounded individual and ultimately a great physician who makes a positive difference in many people's lives.
My Experiences and Skills
I started working towards my Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience at IUPUI in August 2021. At the time, I was working at Dick's Sporting Goods in Noblesville, IN. Due to my work outside of school, as well as me not being aware of all of the opportunities available to me on campus, I was less involved in activities on campus and more heavily invested in my work at DSG. I won Employee of the Month in August 2021, which was only my 3rd month with the company. However, as I began to integrate myself more into my studies and extracurricular activities on campus, my availability for work began to decrease, and I made the difficult decision to temporarily leave DSG, but left the door open for me to return if I was able to in the future. I filled my newfound time with various on-campus engagements, including VIDA, Jagathon, and peer leadership.
I applied for an Event Planning Director position with VIDA in Spring 2022 and was graciously accepted. This position entails meeting with the remainder of the executive board on a biweekly basis and coordinating various events from start to finish. In addition, I was appointed as Canning Chair for Jagathon. As Canning Chair, my responsibility is to identify opportunities and events for myself and other Jagathon members to have a presence at in order to fundraise for the children in Riley Children's Hospital. Finally, as a CHEM C-105 recitation leader, I meet with other leaders once a week to discuss mentorship techniques, as well as meeting with a small group of students and offering my help and insight into not only chemistry, but a variety of other topics as well.
As I reflect upon my time at DSG, I believe I learned a lot about communicating with others, assessing their needs, and helping them find solutions to their issues. I learned to defer to others when I do not have the answer to a problem. For example, I was trained as a footwear associate, but would receive inquiries about all of the departments in the store. I would try to answer these questions to the best of my abilities, but did not hesitate to request assistance if it was needed. This sense of humility has also helped me in my recitation sessions. I may not always have the answer for every question my students have, but they can be assured that I will try my best to guide them to the right answer or resources that may help. Being involved in VIDA and Jagathon has introduced me to people from many different walks of life. I learned a lot about cultural understanding and connecting with new people from these organizations. Holding a position of leadership with VIDA has also taught me a lot about team-building and delegation. I have learned to work to my own and others' strengths, as well as developed a high level of self-accountability.
One aspect I wish to work on is patience when something does not go as expected. When I was working at DSG, I would become upset with myself when I would spend a lot of time serving a customer but did not close a sale, for whatever reason. Furthermore, for example, when the turnout for an event I coordinate for VIDA is not as expected, I spend a lot of time rethinking what I could've done better to avoid that happening. However, I wish to always remember that as long as I have done my absolute best to make something succeed, there is no use in being upset with myself.
Teamwork
My current strengths as a teammate include accountability and communication. I complete my work in a timely manner and hold myself and my work to a high standard. I also attempt to frequently and respectfully communicate with my team members to gauge if there is any way I could improve upon my portion of the task or assist them with theirs.
Being involved in VIDA and Jagathon has instilled a team-first mentality into my approach regarding working in a group. Both of those organizations strive to make an impact for noble causes, and it is imperative for everyone involved to have a selfless approach if we wish to succeed.
My involvement in PLTL has taught me that regardless of one's knowledge of a certain subject or class standing, everyone in a group is equal and should be treated with utmost respect. While I technically hold a position of leadership in the classroom, I try to demonstrate that I am no better than any of my peers; in fact, I look to them for advice on some topics and am always receptive to their criticism or advice.
