I am currently a sophomore at IUPUI pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I am also minoring in Neuroscience and Biology. I've been interested in Psychology my whole life, and find the field fascinating! There are so many paths that I could go down, and so many things to be done. I hope to build a career in research, focusing on animal behavior or animal-assisted therapy, as I am passionate about working with animals.
I've been working in teams for years, and feel confident in my abilities to support and communicate with my team members. When working in stressful situations it is imperative to communicate clearly with team members. I enjoy being able to support and assist my team members, along with guiding them when needed. In some of my previous jobs, I have had to work with others during stressful situations, whether it be a lunch rush or one of those days where everything breaks at once. During these times I learned just how important it is to be calm for the sake of others and to try to put a positive spin on things.
Through this internship, I have learned how important it is to learn from others, and take their skills and experiences into account to be the best team you can be! My role was to learn from the experiences of others and contribute however I could and assist in any necessary ways. I still have a lot to learn to become a better professional, but I'm starting to learn the ropes already.
I'm pretty early in my education and therefore haven't built up a lot of experience in the field of Psychology as of yet. I have volunteered in a Psychology lab on campus, and do work transcribing audio from participants, running tests, and collecting data from participants. I am skilled in problem-solving and communication, as I run into those issues often in my current job where I take care of cats.
For the last three years, I have worked in retail and food service primarily as a barista, where I prepared drinks and assisted customers. I am currently a cat caretaker, where I help customers, along with daily cat care and cleaning. For the last four years, I have had volunteer roles with a local animal shelter, IndyHumane, where first I worked as a volunteer who would come in and clean and socialize animals. I also volunteered as a foster parent, where I have cared for over 50 cats and kittens, including daily care and medicine. I have also worked in a psychology lab on campus that studies schizophrenia where I attend lab meetings, transcribe audio files, and run tests on subjects, including interviews and surveys.
Through these experiences, I have learned a lot. During my time in retail, I have learned how to interact with customers, along with patience and time management. During my time as a volunteer, I have learned the importance of having passion about what you do. I learned the importance of contributing to your community and finding ways to help others. During my time in psychology labs, I learned how to solve problems and think analytically and work independently. I have learned that I like to be busy and work hands-on, I want to tackle a problem head-on and solve it, both to help myself and my coworkers.
