I am a sophomore at IUPUI studying Neuroscience. I am on the pre-med track. I chose to study neuroscience because I love the brain and more so how things go wrong with it. I find it fascinating that there are a vast variety of issues that can occur in the brain and I want to work to solve as many of those issues as I can. This is why I hope to go into the field of medicine so I can study these issues and help those afflicted.
I bring certain values to a team. I can communicate well with the team to understand the issues needed to be resolved, and come up with a plan to learn about and resolve those issues. This understanding comes in part from my previous experiences working apart of a team in the food service industry or a landscaper. Working in the service industry everyone has a role and it is important that you perform your tasks accordingly so others can perform theirs.
My previous experience that is important to the development of my professional skills include an array of experiences that are predominantly manual labor jobs. Last summer I worked as a landscaper for a local landscape company. During this experience I learned how to work with others of varying skill and experience levels in the goal of completing an overarching goal. Most of my other job experiences have been working in food service which has helped me learn to become patient, and learn how to work for the general public. The part I enjoy the most in a job is when what I am doing serves a purpose. I do not like work that I feel is pointless or monotonous for no reason.
After working at my internship site for a while now I have gained some valuable skills. I have learned how to meet professional deadlines, and what they feel like. Even though I have worked and held responsibility before, it feels different when you work in a clinical setting. Even little tasks can have large impacts if done incorrectly. I have also started to gain the ability to try and learn about things I will not understand for a while, if ever.
