I am originally from Carmel, Indiana but grew up in a suburb called Peachtree City, GA. I spent majority of my childhood in Georgia completing middle school before moving to the United Kingdom where I graduated high school. Moving countries has definitely broadened my horizon and affected how I view life in a positive way.
I am currently a junior majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. I decided to major in biology because I enjoy understanding how human beings and other organisms work. I am currently on a pre-med track and I intend on applying to medical school in the summer of 2022. When I was younger I noticed I enjoyed being in the healthcare setting whenever I went for check ups or to the dentist. Additionally my dad being a physician and me seeing his work life further influence my decision to go into healthcare.
For a while I was not sure where in healthcare I would fit in but it wasn't until towards the end of middle school that I was confident that I wanted to be a physician. As of now I haven't decided what type of doctor I want to be but my top two so far are being a cardiologist, or neurologist. This internship would enable me to explore this career path in depth and enlighten me on available options.
I enjoy working in a team setting as I am aware of the benefits of teamwork such as shared ideas and combined skills which can lead to great success. I am also fully aware of the responsibilities of being a good teammate and am always willing to try my best and work productively. At my internship site I shadowed Dr. Nevel and got to understand the nature of a physicians typical day and got familiar with different medical settings. Overtime I started working on some projects such as creating a patient handout on glioblastoma.
Another position I have is with Indiana University Health as a Patient Care Assistant. When applying for the position I wasn't too sure what to expect as prior to this I had not had any clinical experience but in the time I have been there I have learned a lot clinically which will help me in the long run. My role includes obtaining vitals signs and reporting any abnormalities with patients to the primary RN. Safe measures and knowledge of principles of good personal hygiene is of great essence. This role has definitely broadened my knowledge about teamwork as coordinating with RNs effectively is crucial to being successful.
In addition to my internship I had a position with the Office of Academic and Career Development as a Peer Advisor. In this role I have learned a lot about professionalism and has helped in identifying what areas to improve on. Peer advisors serve as resource for academics and can help make a students transition to college life easier. Part of my responsibilities include assisting with planning class schedules, providing resources on major and career explorations. I've liked every part of my job since being in ACD and truly couldn't have asked for a better fit.
