Class Standing: Sophomore
Major: Health Services Management
Involvements: Director of Recruiting for Women in Business, IUPUI OTEAM
I chose this major because I love leading and empowering others. I've always had a passion for healthcare although I didn't want to do the clinical side, so this major is a happy medium. I've been loving my major so far and am genuinely interested in the material and learning about hospital systems, operations, and the different ways to lead others. There's so much more to healthcare than just the physicians and nurses that you see, and I've been loving learning about the business side of healthcare. With this major I hope to achive my master's degree in Health Administraion and work as a health administraor in a hospital.
My strengths as a team member include my ability to collaborate and work well with others. No matter someones personality, I can work fluidly will all types of people and enjoy inspiring and building connections with others. Being able to communicate effectively with my peers allows me to get the task done at hand and also make sure each member of the group is on the same page. I've grown in being a professional from this internship through weekly research meetings and professional email etiquette.
Manager at Jimmy Johns
With first becoming a manager at 17 years old, this position help me grow and mature in ways that I never knew I would. It gave me more responsibility than I've had, but also allowed me to develop my communication and leadership skills. I learned how to create a positive work environment and be a good role model. Here I knew how to open and close the store, bake the adequate amount of bread that's needed, and accurately train new employees. It taught me that I can think quickly and logically when problems arise to come to a solution. This team environment helped me evaluate the leader I wanted to be for others and introduced me to different communication styles from the employees that I worked with, my boss, and customers. This job has taught me skills that'll allow me to better interact with professors, interviewers, and any person that I might meet. I've learned I love having conversations with anyone because of the opportunity of making new connections or learn something new or new experiences.
IUPUI OTEAM Leader
In this role I was a mentor for first-year students at IUPUI. I led and created activities, presentations, and one-on-one meetings with each student. I got to interact with all kinds of students and other mentors and enjoyed being able to connect with so many people. I got to not only develop relationships with others, but also learn new ways to lead and motivate other people. I've learned that your attitude is one of the most important things when leading others because you not only set intentions for the day but people follow the way you act. This experience also helped me gain more confidence in my leadership skills. Although, I was fairly confident going in, me putting myself in new and uncomfortable situations has taught me more about myself and the different skills I still need to learn. I loved being a mentor this semester and am looking forward to being a mentor again next year.
Culinary Service Associate/Starbucks Barista at Eskenzi Health
I currently work at Eskenzi Health as a Culinary Service Associate. Here I rotate to different areas of the Marketplace inlcuding the salad bar and the deli, work at Starbucks, and occassionally work the register at Cafe Soleil. My main tasks are to serve customers, maintain a clean area, and restock/prep the food that's needed. With switching areas at Eskenazi it allows me to interact with all different types of people and personalities. With this I get to continue to build and use my teamwork and communication skills.
Some skills that I have acquired through working and being a mentor is being able to communicate and work well with all different types of people.
Being able to work under pressure
Teaching and leading others
