I am currently a sophomore at IUPUI studying Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics. Chemistry a branch of science that deals with what matter is composed of, atoms, elements, and how they interact with each other in everyday life. I specifically choose Chemistry as my major because I fell in love with organic chemistry and I love seeing, specifically, how biology and chemistry work together to make life, life. I also love organic synthesis and how molecules come together based on electron and proton interaction.
I work very well in a team setting mostly because of my ability to lead that group and communicate effectively. I believe that I have great communication skills and have worked in settings that have enhanced those skills. I believe that I am also able to lead a group well and create a positive work environment that offers encouragement, constructive criticism, and effectiveness.
Over the years, I have worked in retail, in the medical field, or just in my own neighborhood. My first ever job was mowing lawns in my neighborhood. It started with 2 yards and ended up growing to 11 yards within the span of about 5 months. I maintained this summer job all throughout highschool. It taught me great communication skills that I had to had with my customers and time management as I had to balance when I was going to mow lawns with the my busy cross country schedule I had in highschool.
My second job was at my church, I was the facilities team lead and I set up and took down events happening at the church weekly. I was in charge of monitoring the calendar and communicating with upper leadership within the church to get these activities done. I also was on call Sunday mornings if anything was to go astray. This job taught me hard physical work, as it was physically taxing to move tables and chairs around all day. It also taught be integrity and independence, as a main portion of the job was done by myself and with no supervision. I had to learn how to problem solve if something wasn't laid out in front of me and to get the job done even though no one was watching.
My last job was working as a pharmacy technician at Walgreens Pharmacy. I started working the summer after my freshman year of college but stopped working at the end of fall semester sophomore year. The job taught me a lot, mostly customer service and talking with customers when something goes wrong with their medication. It also taught me how to work in a high pressure environment especially during covid when you're trying to fill medications, talk to customers, and give covid tests and covid vaccines all together. It has also opened my eyes to working clinical hours especially working closely with the pharmacist and learning about medications.
I have been in many volunteer opportunities. Two of my biggest opportunities are I've had the privilege's of going to Selma, Alabama and the Dominican Republic in highschool through my church as a mission trip. We picked up trash, cleaned parks, built schools, taught and played with kids, learned about their heritage, etc. This experience really opened my eyes to the world and showed me just how much the rest of the world is like us. It also taught me how to be a good team member because some of the tasks we were assigned to were very difficult and could not be done alone. We needed to work together and communicate in order to get the task done efficiently and effectively, and we did just that.
