This is a valuable goal for my future career because I plan on pursuing a PhD and participating in research would be beneficial practice.
Complete CITI, HIPAA, and research-specific training.
Complete tasks directly involved with data (data cleaning, quality assurance, analysis, reporting, and interpretation).
Learn about and attend conferences (summarize research & learn about current undergoing research).
Complete guided readings and/or training recommended by supervisor and colleagues.
Independently identify data trends and formulate possible research questions.
Collaborate with supervisor and colleagues to discuss and develop finalized products.
Attend to roles and responsibilities of different team members – including those with different types of credentials – for ongoing projects.
Meet with various team members with varied roles and training backgrounds to better understand different career paths in clinical research and mental health.
Contribute to projects, including careful review of protocols and methods; ask clarifying questions.
My current strengths include problem-solving, perseverance, and receiving constructive criticism alongside feedback. I have been presented with ambiguous tasks and approached them independently. If progress is not being made, I will consult with my supervisor and colleagues for clarification and guidance. When seeking solutions from my supervisor and colleagues,
I welcome and critically reflect on the given feedback. This initiates a discussion that guides me to an alternative solution.
I would like to improve my skills of integration and application, and independence. I currently struggle with these skills because I have not been exposed to or practiced research methods. This would manifest as independently implementing previously understood concepts into a new setting. Throughout my internship, I will grow this skill by asking my supervisor and colleagues for clarification on concepts I lack a foundational understanding of. This will also improve as I independently and directly implement newly learned concepts into newly given tasks.
I have no experience in research, but I do have the existing strength of open-mindedness and perseverance. I have been further developing these qualities by attending all opportunities involving current research and important mental health concepts. I have been exposed to tasks that involve independent work and require background knowledge of developing research. This has been a difficult task, but due to my perseverance, I have taken it as an opportunity to develop my identity as a researcher. This has led to me independently attempting the given tasks, asking my supervisor for guidance when needed, and reattempting.
This internship has helped me gain a deeper understanding of my majors in psychology and neuroscience. Participating in the psychiatry grand rounds and ECHOs have provided me exposure to content I am either currently learning or can apply previously learned concepts. Biology has helped me apply my current knowledge to understand some presented concepts during the psychiatry grand rounds. During the presentation of real cases, I am capable of applying psychology concepts and my background in biology has helped me gain comprehension of certain symptoms. Overall, I have found my coursework to be relevant to the current research and didactics I have been exposed to in my internship.
