Primary Sources & DBQs

Sources with a red border may be difficult to view. Some of the materials relate to violent or graphic events. However, these materials are curated and included because of their historical significance. While some of the material is unsettling it is important to recognize that these are real events that occurred and affected real people, and they may help make sense of why our societies are the way they are.

After reading the historical context information and reflecting upon the timeline, complete the following DBQs..

Context: The first picture above was taken of a community restaurant , "Donut Shop" in the early 1970s . The second picture was taken in 2007 from the exact same angle and exact same location as the first.

Document Based Questions:

  1. Compare and contrast the first picture with the second two.

  2. What differences can you note in the types of businesses in the first and second picture?

  3. How might the neighborhood of Hayti be different had the project not taken place? Use the differences in the two pictures above to guide your thinking, along with your knowledge about Hayti.
