Summary: This group project from HON-H 200 asked us to choose a cognitive bias and and create an artifact that we can present and share with the class. My group choose the gambler's fallacy, and wanted to explore how this bias affects students. We created an infographic via Adobe Creative Cloud and decided to play on the "casino" theme while talking about what the fallacy is, where it can occur, and how to prevent it.
Reflection: This assignment challenged my visual and artsy side, which is not a creative skill I normally use in my engineering classes. I really enjoyed being able to work with colors and visual effects, and found that creating products - such as infographics - is not as intimidating as I once thought it was. I also learned a lot about the gambler's fallacy, and have since paid more mind to the bias' in my everyday life.
Summary: The 'I Am' and 'I Want to Become' statements were developed throughout the fall 2022 semester, in my HON-H 200 class. They embody my values, goals, and perceptions of what it means to me to be an honors student at IUPUI. These statements will be updated as I grow during my IUPUI career and continue to refine who I want to be in the world, as a person and as a professional.
Reflection: Creating these statements was a little challenging at first, as I've never been asked to write down my values and how they apply to the classroom, work environment, and future education and career goals. However I can definitely see the use of creating these statements, and think there is a huge benefit in regularly updating them as I grow.
'I Am' Statement: I am driven to succeed because of my desire to improve the quality of life for others. I am empathetic and value other people's insights when making decisions. I am dedicated to my goal of creating biomedical products that improve and advance the field of medicine.
'I Want to Become' Statement: I want to become an individual who continues to reflect my “I Am” statement by dedicating myself to both my coursework and my future as a biomedical engineering professional. I want to become someone who not only embodies the values listed in my “I Am” statement, but also one who is committed to continually improving. As an engineer, I want to become a person who will not shy away from a growth mindset and will continue to make new goals as I achieve others. For example, when I graduate, I want to create a new goal such as graduate school or landing a job at a workplace that is close to my family and allows for opportunities for growth. I want to remember my work’s purpose and be proud of the work that I have accomplished, and will continue to accomplish. As a person, I want to become someone who can be a mentor to others and inspire them. I especially want to encourage other women and veterans to explore engineering, and know that it is achievable. I also want to be present with my friends and family and want to be a reliable person that they can always count on. Even though I want to put 100% into my job, I also want to always put people first - the people that use/receive the biomedical engineering products that I make, and the people in my circle of friends and family. I want to become someone who never forgets the human side of things and will value honesty, empathy, and open-mindedness. As a student, family member, friend, future engineer, and human being, I want to become someone who is consistently focused on growing as all of those things, and who can leave the world better than I found it.
