This section includes work that I completed during H200, my sophomore year, and reflecting on who I was back then. This section also updated work that I completed again during my senior year. This section demonstrated my growth both professionally and personally.
I entered the IU Indianapolis Honors College in the Fall of 2022 as a recent high school graduate, trying to figure out how to navigate moving away from home, now living in a big city and not a small rural town, and how to balance academics with making genuine connections with others around me. At that time, my goals were aimed at finding where I fit in here, as well as proving myself within the classroom. As my graduation quickly approaches, I can look back now and see how much I have changed and evolved in so many ways. Through my experience at IU Indianapolis and the IU Indianapolis Honors College, I have refined my professional and personal skills and truly made a professional sense of self for myself and my future. The same determination that brought me to college has ignited into something so much bigger that drives me every day to achieve my goals.
I am a diligent student who values early preparation, which is shown through my work and passion to double-major in my time at IUPUI. I am involved in the Catholic Student Organization and the new Men’s Volleyball Club, where I am on the executive board as the reservationist, which proves that I am a leader who values involvement within the community. I am a member of the IUPUI Honors College, a volunteer at Cats’ Haven in Indianapolis, and an employee at Jumping Jacks Entertainment in Huntingburg, where I strive to enhance children’s parties with inflatables, games, and other fun activities. This shows that I enjoy helping others around me.
When I wrote my H200 statement, I was a recent high school graduate who was still adjusting to living away from home, trying to meet new people, and balancing a new academic life. I was a new member of the IU Indianapolis Honors College and still discovering what it offered. I was trying to find my place in Indianapolis, both on and off campus, while I was also excited to prove myself in the classroom and develop professional skills to propel my future.
I Am:
I am an Honors College student at IU Indianapolis, double-majoring in Biology and Psychology. I am a dedicated volunteer with many organizations, both on and off campus. I am the founder and president of the A Kid Again club at IU Indianapolis, where I aim to volunteer and fundraise with the A Kid Again Indiana Chapter. I am a motivated and driven individual who is committed to academic growth, leadership, and making a meaningful impact in my community.
I Want To Become:
I aspire to practice general dentistry in the military and become a leader within my community. While I prepare for dental school, I plan to further my professional skills and personal experiences through various opportunities. In the future, I aspire to give back by participating in dental missions in other countries to improve oral hygiene worldwide! I also plan to travel and see the world with my family.
Looking back on my original H200 statement, I can remember where I was professionally, academically, and socially at the time. During this time, I was focused heavily on my academics and how I was performing in the classroom. However, I struggled socially and outside of the classroom. I was searching for volunteer opportunities where I fit. I now look at my experiences since H200, and I can see how much I have grown. My values have continued to deepen and mature as I have grown both personally and academically. Through this growth, I have strengthened my professional skill set while also cultivating more meaningful and effective interpersonal relationships. My understanding of success and what it means to live a fulfilling life has evolved, allowing me to move beyond a narrow definition of achievement and toward a more intentional sense of purpose. What once felt distant and unattainable during my time in H200 now feels structured and achievable, as I have created a clear and realistic roadmap to reach my goals with confidence and direction.
As a new high school graduate, I was excited to create a visual plan for my future that also highlighted how I reached the position that I was in. I was able to execute this through a journey map in H200. This assignment allowed me to create a rough timeline for the plans that I had for the future. This journey map serves as a display of how I was at the time that I was in H200: a determined and motivated student who had a set plan of what I wanted to achieve, but was uncertain about the steps to achieve that, which is an insight as to why my journey map from H200 is rather vague. Looking back at my original journey map highlights how much I have learned about my career path and how to achieve it, as well as better developed my understanding of professional and personal skills throughout my experiences.
My Original H200 Journey Map
My Actual Honors Journey Map
Looking back on my Journey Map from H200, one of the most immediate differences that I can see is the amount of information that I lacked when I was in H200 about my path. It is obvious to me that when I was taking H200, I knew what my goals and dreams were. However, I did not know how to achieve those goals. The difference in my Journey Maps is an artifact to show how much I have learned throughout my time as an undergraduate, and the experiences that I have gained.
Over my four years at IU Indianapolis, the goals that I had in H200 have been solidified into steps that I am currently taking to achieve those goals. The experiences listed on my Journey Map, such as interning and shadowing various dental specialities, attending meetings to better understand the steps I need to take, and conducting literary research about various subjects within dentistry has allowed me to gain the necessary knowledge to take the next steps in my future, which are apply and attend dental school. These experiences have also further developed my research skills, communication skills, teamwork skills, and many others. These experiences and the refining of these skills have allowed me to create a strong professional sense of self.
