During my experience as an undergradate student, I had the amazing opportunity to study a different culture in a new environment. The School of Liberal Arts presented students the opportunity to study abroad in Wroclaw, Poland for two weeks and experience the different aspects of their culture and how it ultimatley tied back to the essence of communication, furthering my knowledge on utilizing communication to embrace difference (LOC 8). Check Wroclaw through my eyes and experience this culture to the fullest down below.
The city of Wroclaw was the first place I traveled to out of the country. It is a city known for it's many dwarves placed around the city, the market place (the Rynek), and its' Cathedral Island. To the left is a image I captured during this trip, showing the city during a rainy day.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM MY EXPERIENCE ABROAD
In order to grow, we have to put ourselves outside of the boundaries we are used to. Communicating with a different cultrue allowed me to open my eyes to the different ways of living and through this, improve my own. Since I've come back from Poland, I have limited my consumption as a consumer and started being much more resourseful.
Being in another country for two weeks took alot of adjustment. The transportation was different. The food was different. The people were different. Even the showers were different...lol. This experience taught me that different is okay! Through adjusting I learned how to expand outside of what I was used to and fit in with the culture I had now become apart of, furthering being able to communicate with others in this enviroment.
Lastly, my experience in Poland led me to understand that there isn't just one way to go about things. During this trip, our group studied "Communication and the Human Condition". This book pointed out that in order to create a better society, we must stray from the thinking that one way of life is better than the other. In studying this, I was able to venture out into the city and speak with natives. We talked about their norms and even compared their country to my own. In this, I created bonds with people who I am still connected with and even started my own habit changes.
