The Life Health Sciences Internship (LHSI) program is designed to connect undergraduate students with hands‑on research and professional experiences in the life and health sciences. Becoming an LHSI Ambassador is meaningful to me because it allows me to support other students who are navigating the same process I once struggled through. It also gives me the chance to represent a program that helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally.
My journey with LHSI didn’t start with success; it began with rejection. The first time I applied, I wasn’t selected. The rejection pushed me to reflect on my weaknesses and better understand what the program was looking for. I focused on improving the clarity of my application, highlighting my experiences more intentionally, and showing genuine passion for learning.
When I reapplied, I went in with more confidence, awareness, and preparation. Being accepted the second time was a turning point for me. It showed me the value of resilience and reminded me that growth often comes from the moments that challenge us the most.
As an LHSI Ambassador, my responsibilities include:
Representing LHSI at events such as information sessions and workshops.
Sharing my internship experience to help students understand the application process and internship expectations.
Answering questions from students and offering guidance based on my own challenges and successes.
Helping promote the program and strengthening the connection between interns and the LHSI staff.
Encouraging students to reflect on their goals and make the most of their internship experience.
This role has helped me develop essential professional skills, including communication, leadership, and public speaking. I’ve learned how to engage with diverse groups of students and represent a program professionally.
These skills directly support my long‑term goals in dentistry. Dentistry is a highly social profession, and as an ambassador, I practice the interpersonal skills that will enable me to connect with future patients, work effectively in a team, and educate others with empathy and clarity.
Serving as an ambassador is meaningful because it allows me to give back. I understand how overwhelming the application process can feel, so being able to guide students through it is rewarding. This role also aligns with my values of supporting others, uplifting my community, and serving with compassion, principles that are central to both my faith and my future career in healthcare.
Overall, being an LHSI Ambassador has strengthened my confidence, improved my leadership abilities, and reminded me that every setback can be transformed into an opportunity for growth.
