How will I achieve this goal?
collaborate with team members on projects for the Essential Topics in Collaboration (ETC)
attend the Comprehensive Pain Assessment Clinic (CoPAC)
attend ETC events
How have I been working towards this goal?
During my first semester as an intern, I was able to attend the CoPAC clinic weekly. This has allowed me to observe all disciplines in the clinic (e.g. chaplaincy, nursing, family medicine, social work, physical therapy, pharmacy, etc.) and see how each of them approach patient care.
How will I achieve this goal?
read medical documentation in the clinical setting
review a medical terminology workbook
compile spreadsheets of patient data
How have I been working towards this goal?
I have been able to get my hands on some medical documentation while working in the CoPAC clinic. This has allowed me to struggle with the terminology and ask my team when I do not understand something.
How will I achieve this goal?
visit patients alongside care providers with various experiences
How have I been working towards this goal?
I have observed doctors, physical therapists, social workers, and many other disciplines in the clinic. Through this experience, I have been able learn how to approach patients and express medical information in a way that they will comprehend. I have also learned that although it is very important to know how to talk with patients, it even more important the listen to the patients and their needs/wants.
My biggest long-term goal at the moment is to get accepted into dental school. I aspire to become a general dentist, orthodontist, or pediatric dentist in the future. The dental field has always been fascinating to me, but my first check up at a dental office made me realize that dentistry was something that I could see myself doing as a career.
I became interested in dentistry when I was about 9 years old; I had been to the dentist a few times before I was 9, but my parents never saw a dentist regularly which directly translated to the same for me and my sister. My parents changed to an insurance that covered dental care around this time, so all of us started going to the dentist every 6 months. Unlike most children, I was excited to go to the dentist and enjoyed the process of getting checked for cavities, taking X-rays, and getting my teeth cleaned. I found the tools to be interesting and my dentist made me feel very comfortable the whole time I was there. As a result, I could not see myself going down any other career path other than dentistry, and I am excited to become a dentist in the future.
I am very confident in my decision to become a dentist. I love talking to people and making them feel better about themselves, which is something that I do in my jobs as a tutor, mentor, and recitation leader. I also think it is important to expose myself to the dental field as much as possible, so I shadowed a general dentist in my hometown for about 70 hours over the summer and plan to go back whenever I can. I am also planning to shadow in different offices, such as pediatric and orthodontic offices, during my breaks from school.
In order to get closer to getting into dental school, I can do a few different things now. First, I will make appointments to meet with my advisors and the PREPs office in the spring to make sure that I am on track to graduate and that I have planned out all of the prerequisites needed for dental school. Second, I will narrow down my list of dental schools that I am interested in and start to look into touring different schools. Finally, I will look into the AADSAS application and familiarize myself with the application process.
In the spring, I will lock in two or three dental offices to shadow in for this coming summer. I will also look into dental related jobs for the summer so that I can save up for the DAT and study materials. Finally, I will visit some schools that I am interested in and make sure that I have planned out the prerequisites needed for those schools.
By this time next year, I will have all of my shadowing hours and a complete list of schools that I want to apply to completed. I will also get involved in some type of undergraduate research to strengthen my application for dental school.
This summer, it is important to me that I finish up all of my shadowing hours needed for dental school. With that being said, I have contacted the dentist that I previously shadowed and arranged a shadowing schedule for this summer. I still need to lock in 2 or 3 more dentists to shadow, and I plan on reaching out to a couple different offices after spring break.
I am also planning on getting experience in a research lab on campus next school year, so I need to reach out to PREPs and some professors about getting involved. In addition to research and shadowing, I want to obtain 200 volunteer hours, prepare for and take the DAT, and apply to dental school before I graduate. In order to do so, I have started volunteering weekly at Riley Hospital for Children, and I have came up with a timeline with PREPs that will help me prepare for the DAT and dental school applications.
My internship with the IPE Center has done nothing but increase my desire to be a dentist in the future. This internship has been an amazing experience, and I have learned the importance of collaboration with not only collogues, but other disciplines, as well. I have seen many professionals at CoPAC interact with patients and work to help them with their pain, which has ultimately made me realize that I am eager to help patients of my own in the future.
I am very confident in my ability to use my self-knowledge and preferences to make career-related decisions. I feel like I know my strengths, such as communication, teamwork, and organization, and how they can positively impact my future career as a dentist.
