I am a junior, a biology major and business, and on the pre-dental track. I chose biology as my major because I enjoy learning about living things and how they function, and thought it would be a helpful major for the pre-dental track. I added a business minor because I think having some business knowledge is always helpful, especially in dentistry if I ever choose to run my own practice someday.
I enjoy collaborating with other people to come up with new ideas and solutions, and reach compromises when there is a disagreement.
Through my previous experiences, I've learned that there needs to be communication for a team to function properly, Each person needs to know what tasks to focus on, as well as when to step in and help out with other tasks.
My role at my internship site was fairly static over the past year as I mostly performed the same tasks, but I did gain more confidence in my role as time went on and I gained more experience.
I have previously worked as a pharmacy technician at CVS, and in another lab on campus as a research technician. Through my job as a pharmacy technician, I have learned to sharpen my attention to detail as it is an important characteristic to have in the pharmacy, as well as how to effectively communicate with others when there is an issue of some sort. I have also learned to effectively multitask as working in the pharmacy requires many responsibilities, including assisting patients picking up and dropping off prescriptions, answering the phone, and filling prescriptions and delivery orders. Through my job as a research technician, I have learned how to do scientific procedures and experiments I had only touched on in class, as well as making scientific posters and communicating my findings through symposiums. These skills will be very useful for my current internship, and through both of these jobs I've learned how to manage multiple tasks and how to prioritize and use my time efficiently.
I've learned that I enjoy analyzing data and drawing conclusions based off of it, which is done often in the lab. It feels like solving a puzzle, and I get a sense of satisfaction when I'm able to successfully analyze a set of data. I don't enjoy being in very stressful situations where I'm pressed for time, as was often the case working in the pharmacy.
Over the fall semester, I did a bit of dental shadowing. While I haven't gained any particular skills or strengths from this experience, I've learned more about what goes into running a dental office and the inner workings of a dentist's job. This has further solidified my interest in dentistry, and I hope to keep learning more through my future experiences.
