Graduate-Level Courses:

SLST-T501 Academic Writing for International Graduate Students

Graduate level course for non-native speakers of English to develop academic writing skills necessary for graduate-level research. The course culminates in an 8-10 page literature review related to each student's area of research. Topics include identifying and documenting sources, plagiarism, summarizing, review writing, and grammar-based language use.

SLST-T501 English for Law II


Graduate-level course designed for non-native speakers of English admitted to the Pathway program of the law school. The course targets speaking, listening, writing, and reading development through topics related to current events at the local, national, and international levels. Primary focus is on developing grammatical competence in speech and writing.

SLST-T501 English for Law III


Course continues from the end of English for Law II with the same overarching goals. Primary focus shifts to argument structure and logic in extended monologic speaking and writing events.

SLST-T501 English for Law IV

Continuation from English for Law III. Overarching goals remain the same. Primary focus of the course shifts to recognizing and comprehending (un)familiar vocabulary in extended reading and listening events.

SLST-T102 Academic Listening

Designed to help non-native speakers of English critically listen in academic settings. Focus is on commonly used language in lectures and academic discussions. Students are also introduced to various listening strategies.

SLST-T103 Pronunciation Improvement

Designed to help non-native speakers of English communicate effectively. Focus of the course is on consonants, vowels, stress, rhythm, and intonation. Curriculum is individualized to the needs of each student.

SLST-T104 Speaking Fluency Development

Designed to help non-native speakers of English communicate effectively. Focus of the course is on speech rate, pause times, connected speech, and utterance length. Students learn to identify and produce speech with more fluent qualities.

Pre-Undergraduate-Level Courses (Intensive English Program):

SLST-T64 Level 4 Reading and Writing

Course designed for non-native speakers of English with TOEFL scores between 420 and 450. Students learn to comprehend texts at the 800-950 lexile level, summarize texts, and write essays of at least 5 paragraphs.

Summer 2019

SLST-T65 Level 5 Reading and Writing

Course designed for non-native speakers of English with TOEFL scores between 450 and 500. Students learn to comprehend texts at the 950-1100 lexile level, analyze persuasive texts, and write multi-sourced essays with appropriate conventions (e.g., citations).
