I have enjoyed my time at IUPUI, as an out-of-state student, I was very worried about the transition from being home to being in a dorm, especially with being hours away from everyone that I know. The school has a lot to offer for students to do. From clubs that can be helpful for future careers, as well as various advisors like professors or even fellow students who have been where one has started and will be able to guide what the next goal is.
Studying schedule was one of the hardest portions of college, especially for the first semester. A good rule of thumb is for every hour you spend in lecture, expect to do 2-3 hours extra outside of class. Yes, it is a lot, but when you do that, you can find that the time spent outside of class is helpful. This is exceptionally helpful if you taking a class in which you have no prior knowledge.
I learned that I also just need to stay away from drama, they only just made focusing hard. I was trying to help friends figure out their problems and due to the stress it caused me, I did not study well causing me to fail one of my exams. As well as I have also learned that as a student there still needs to be time set aside to have and to be able to go do an activity that will help one destress.
I have always been huge when it came to my family, and my significant other, being away from them all the time has been hard. Especially when you're missing the home-cooked meals or spending time with the people that you love. Especially with being an out-of-state student, it has been a hard transition. I still make the time to be able to go see my family at least once a month, for others who are unable to go home as often even 4 hours each way for me is rough, I 100% suggest at least calling your family once a week, it makes the transition a little bit easier. Even if it is not blood family but people who you are close with back home, make sure to be talking with them as well. They will be able to help you destress with your inside jokes. I found that to be helpful myself.
As well as making friends on campus helped a lot. My friends and I created days where we just go and get coffee since there is a coffee shop near the ICTC building, we go before our class every Tuesday and Thursday for example. There are also days when another set of friends and I would have a game night as a destress night. You just have to find what works best for you.
I have been able to find a job until I start my internships using one of my hobbies as a cheer coach that I am enjoying. I have cheered my entire life, and it has impacted my leadership as I grew up. I learned the type of leader that I wanted to be as I went through my career as an athlete, and now I get the chance to help others grow up in a way that makes an athlete feel loved and heard. Just in the short time that I have been working as a coach, I have been able to have the joy of watching my athletes get so excited when they get a new skill. It has shown me that even with the stress of the first semester of college that there is still other ways to find joy outside of the busy schedule of school.
