My name is Hiba Asad (she/her) and I am a sophomore with a Nursing major and minor in Health Communications. I chose to become a Nursing major because of a volunteer experience I had during high school. It was the Eskenazi VolunTeen program in which we were album to shadow and volunteer in various departments of the hospital. During my time volunteering in the Intensive Care Unit, I was able to see what a nurse does day to day and instantly saw myself doing that in the future. I plan to continue my schooling after undergraduate in order to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
My current strengths as a team member is that I work hard to collaborate with my teammates. I often communicate my opinions and questions in order to understand my teammates as well as fulfilling any role that's needed, such as a leader or follower. Throughout this year I have been a supporting team member, I have taken on practical tasks and ease tension for other team memebers by promoting harmony. I have grown into this role as I have gained many skills and experience in areas which I lacked.
My previous experiences taught me that when being a team member, being good at listening is very important. Especially when I learned how to draw blood, I made sure to actively listen in order to learn how to do my job well and efficiently. This is important because in order to improve and learn, we must listen to feedback and instructions. It is also important to have a good leader. To me, a good leader is someone who is willing to help each individual person in order to allow for more efficient work. For example, they may take time out of their own schedule to make sure that everyone is doing their job correctly and help them if they need it. While, I may not always have the opportunities to lead others I do my best in following what leaders want and need from their fellow team members to provide for an efficient work setting.
My volunteer service dates back to my years in middle school. I involved myself in the Carmel Public Library's Volunteer Corporations and later joined their Teen Library Council. During this time I was able to help with maintenance such as cleaning, but majority of my work involved assisting during events in which I would take on various tasks such as setting up, cleaning up, guiding people, and much more. I think this experience allowed me to become flexible in what I am told to do and stay busy in order to be of the most efficient help. Other volunteer opportunities I participated in was the Eskenazi VolunTeen program, Indiana University (IU) Health Hospital North Guest Relations, and at Carmel TherAplay. This is when I started gaining experience in various healthcare settings. Each allowed me to have patient interaction, but each individual experience was unique. Eskenazi allowed me to shadow diverse areas of the hospital such as Emergency, Intensive Care Unit, and Janitorial Services. During my time at Eskenazi is when I actually discovered that I wanted to pursue a career in Nursing. I enjoyed the pace, hours, and environment in which a Nurse is put in. IU North allowed me to direct patients in the right direction, tidy up, and screen patients at the door as part of the Guest Relations team. Lastly, Carmel TherAplay was unique as I not only interacted with patients and therapists, but horses as well. It taught me to be flexible in differing settings, while also teaching me a sense of routine. To learn more about each organization's volunteer opportunities, click the links below.
A new strength that I have identified throughout this program is teamwork. Before this, most of my experiences have been individual or collaboration with others of differing roles. Now, I have been able to assist others with similar tasks and be a supporting member. This has allowed us to improve efficiency and productivity as I assist in consuming tasks or take over easier tasks when others are busy. Therefore, we have been able to share responsibilities and divide tasks appropriately. Additional experiences that have allowed me to grow my leadership skills is being the secretary of Asian Student Union and Pakistani Student Association. I was able to work on my public speaking skills as I played role as an MC as well as spoke to club members at events throughout the year.
The skills and strengths I already have include punctuality, detail-oriented, and being organized. I feel that I always show up on time, and get tasks done when they need to be done. I make sure to not only get the task done, but also pay attention to the details in order to confirm that the job was done well. Lastly, I organize my tasks, files, and schedules well to make sure that everything is managed and I do not over commit myself. The tasks I enjoy include having a different routine each day, while also being confident in the tasks I need to complete. While at first it can be difficult to learn the various tasks and responsibilities in a career, once I learn and become confident in it, I start enjoying the task as well.
Some non-LHSI skills I have built during the fall semester include the work I have done in the two clubs I am an execuetive board member on. I am secretary for both Pakistani Student Association and Asian Student Union. In this role, I have learned how to write and send out biweekly newsletters to members in the club, assist in event planning, improved my public speaking skills, and took meeting minutes every week, improving my technological and typing skills. Additionally, in my hobbies I have improved in my video editing skills as well as trying out new styles while learning how to do digital art.
