Internship

Project Summary

Kids HealthCast is a pediatric focused podcast recorded by pediatric residents at the IU School of Medicine. This podcast is made for parents and the public to educate on how to support children’s development, mental and physical needs, and even addresses various concerns and questions people may have regarding pediatric health. With this podcast, we hope to keep parents updated, aware, and educated on ways they can keep their children safe and raise them in a fulfilling environment that will help them to thrive. The podcast consists of parenting tips, current news that is relevant to children's health, informative main topics, and answers to several questions parents may have! My fellow intern, Cynthia, and I record the residents, edit the podcasts, create social media posts, and instruct the residents when recording. A new episode is available monthly on Spotify, apple music, and their website.

About the Internship

The goal of the pediatric kid's health podcast is to inform parents of how to support their children's developmental, physical, and mental needs and address various concerns they may have regarding their kids' behaviors. With this podcast, we hope to keep parents updated and educated on ways they can keep their children safe and raise them in an appropriate environment that will allow them to thrive.

Workplace

One of my current strengths is communication. Since my fellow intern and supervisor are new to this process, we have been communicating extensively and utilizing outside resources to help get started. By communicating, we have learned how to use new equipment efficiently and caught up on all podcast editing quicker than expected which helped keep the podcast progressing and will help future interns. With the help from an outsider perspective who works in podcasting we learned how to use new software and successfully work our updated equipment. Regarding growing as a professional, I would like to work on making more connections to become more educated and seek additional opportunities. Many times, I become too intimidated and overall nervous, but in order to achieve my goals, I need to step out of my comfort zone. I have certainly improved in this aspect as I have connected with a clinical psychologist at my site who has presented me with various opportunities and helped me figure out a path after undergrad.

Successes and Challenges

I felt successful after finally becoming confident in my abilities to help manage the podcast, specifically when my supervisor assured my fellow intern and I that she believes in us to make our own decisions regarding the work and trusts us to manage it all. To get to this point, we really had to learn the entire process on our own when it came to editing, recording, and uploading. We utilized the resources we were given while also communicating with each other and our supervisor to figure it all out. Just recently we met with someone who works with podcasting and with his help we learned how to use brand new equipment and editing software. This all has helped me learn I can achieve anything with the help of others and some determination.

The most challenging part of this experience was learning how to edit, record, and work with all the equipment for the podcast. My supervisor is fairly new to her job and did not get to spend much time with the last interns, therefore we all had to learn together. Initially, there were podcasts recorded by the last interns and ones over the summer that were recorded, but not edited so the workload was overwhelming at first. Now, this is not as much as an issue as we are nearly caught up on editing and have made a significant amount of progress in little time. By communicating with each other and using all the resources we were given, we have gotten to a better place where we know what we are doing and can do it well though at first, I wasn't sure we would be able to.
