About Me

            My Major

I am a second year student at IUPUI majoring in epidemiology and minoring in health psychology. Epidemiology is the method used to find the causes of health outcomes and diseases in populations. I chose this academic path because I wanted to improve health outcomes in the communities I work with. With epidemiology, I work with large groups of people, not individuals, thus making improvements on whole communities, not just singular patients. The widespread impact that epidemiologist have on communities inspired me to focus my studies in that area.

Teamwork

As a team member, I am strong in the areas of communication, problem solving, and time management. I believe that communication is at the root of every good team, thus being efficient in this area is trait that I constantly showcase in my work. I am cool under pressure, making problem solving a strong suit of mine if things go field. I am able to critically think and solve issues regardless of the situation at hand. Time management is crucial to every good team as well, it is important to stay on track and keep in check on any time constraints. I am able to keep teams in check when it comes to deadlines and remaining efficient throughout the entirety of the situation at hand. All of my previous experiences have taught me how important it is to be present in team situations and to not rely on everyone's to do the work for you.

Upon conclusion of my internship with LHSI, I have been able to learn more about myself as a team-member. At the beginning of the internship, I was very on board with whatever my internship wanted me to do. This included things like team shadowing within clinics at Riley and working through certifications necessary for my internship work. As time went on, I became more aware of the value of time and asked that my internship team provide me with work that is beneficial and challenging for all parties. From there, my work became very independent as I cold-called patients and I relied little on the team to conduct me through the tasks asked of me.  As a teammate, I would deem myself to being a contributor to my team at the end of my internship. The work that I did was necessary and I contributed to the overall cause immensely, however; little to no leadership and communication amongst my team was required as time went on in the internship. As a professional, I would deem myself to hold myself high in the areas of integrity and respect within the workplace. I will do what is right for me, my team, and the people whom I am impacting while also respecting any boundaries I am bound to.

My Experiences and Skills

  Customer Service

Before and during my internship with LHSI, I have had years of experience in the customer service sector. I have worked at both McDonalds and Starbucks for a combined three years total. Through these opportunities, I have gained skills in the areas of communication and efficiency. Communication occurs in all aspects of this line of work, including customer to worker communication as well as worker to worker communication. This trait carries over into both my education and my internship. In the area of customer service, efficiency was gained as multi-tasking and a fast pace is key.

Volunteering

Throughout college, I have emphasized giving back to the community that has given so much to me. By doing so, I have been able to volunteer at several places, most of which are food pantries. Through these experiences, I have learned valuable lessons in compassion and diversity. With learning these lessons, my passion for public health and epidemiology is strengthened as I want to help the community members that I learn so much about from these experiences.

                               Mentoring

An opportunity that I have been given at IUPUI is the role of an FYS mentor. An FYS mentor is a mentor for the first-year students at IUPUI that are there to increase new students' sense of belongingness to the campus, support and ease their transition to college life, and help them make plans for success in their first semester. Through this opportunity, I have learned a lot about time management and leadership through the interactions between my students and I.

  Starting LHSI

With starting LHSI, I know that I have strong skills in communication, time management, and problem-solving. Though I do not have much experience in college in terms of leadership, I would love to showcase my skills in this area more. From previous experience, I know I enjoy human interactions and talking to people about a variety of things. However, I know I am not very strong with computer applications, but would love to learn more and become more efficient as time goes on.

Strengths

Upon conclusion of LHSI and this school year as a whole, I have been involved in a-lot of activities where I have been able to grow as a professional and student. Some strengths that have been identified through this years work include:
