My current career goals are that I strive to attend medical school and become a licensed forensic pathologist. I have these goals because I have always loved forensics and medicine. Forensic pathology is where the two domains meet. I am fairly certain that this is what I want to do because I am currently majoring in forensic science and enjoy learning about true crime. What I will do this year, is to continue to gain relevant experience through this internship as well as other opportunities in the future. This will help me learn about my career goals and preferences by helping me explore new options.
In March, I reflected on my internship experience and how it confirmed or changed my career planning journey and goals. Over the past month, I have made significant progress in analyzing tissue samples and using a microscope. I have reviewed slides, participated in weekly meetings, and studied immunohistochemistry, although interpreting complex structures remains challenging. I have also become proficient in using microscope tools and presenting slides, but adjusting settings for optimal viewing needs more practice. This experience has reinforced my aspiration to become a board-certified Forensic Pathologist, and I feel more confident in using my self-knowledge and preferences to make career-related decisions.
In March, I reviewed the goals I stated on my LHSI application and reflected on how they have changed over the past year. I have made significant progress in both analyzing tissue samples and using a microscope. My internship experience has provided valuable insights and practical skills, confirming my career goals. This summer, I plan to continue honing my skills by seeking additional training opportunities and engaging in more hands-on practice. During the rest of my time at IU Indianapolis, I will focus on deepening my understanding of forensic pathology and building a strong foundation for my future career.
In October, add the three goals that you submitted to the goals assignment in September. You can copy those goals, relevance and action plan right here in order to guarantee that your ePortfolio accurately reflects the conversation you had with your supervisor. In March, update your progress and what you'll do next under each internship goal. Use the format below from the assignment for each goal.
Learning Goal #1: To learn how to correctly analyze and process Tissue Samples.
Relevance: This fits my goals because in the future because hopefully I will one day be a board-certified Forensic Pathologist and as one of my tasks, I will be studying tissues under a microscope.
Action Plan: 1. Slide review including reviewing Gross Anatomy
2. Weekly meetings to discuss findings as well as training.
3. Studying on immunohistochemistry.
Learning Goal #2: To learn how to use a microscope properly for the examination of slides.
Relevance: This relates to me because in my future career I will one day be examining slides under a microscope and be expected to know how to properly use it.
Action Plan: 1. Microscope analysis including learning how to use basic tools on the microscope.
2. Learning about how to present a slide on the microscope stage.
3. Learning about the different scopes.

I have reviewed slides, participated in weekly meetings, and studied immunohistochemistry, although interpreting complex structures remains challenging. I have also become proficient in using microscope tools and presenting slides, but adjusting settings for optimal viewing needs more practice. Moving forward, I plan to seek more guidance and allocate additional study time, with no changes to my goals needed at this time.
Learning Goal #3: Learn how to label a pathology sample correctly, including anatomy of the cell.
Relevance: This relates because Before I become a Pathologist I must first go to medical school and any training done previously will help me in that goal.
Action Plan: 1. Study apoptosis and other related phases.
2. Study basic cellular structures.
3. Study anatomy of the cell including lesions and abnormalities.
In October you'll complete your fall self-assessment survey (link in Canvas).Learning to assess your own growth and learning progress is an important skill you’ll need in graduate school and in the workplace. You did a similar self-assessment at orientation and will do it again in spring to continue to track your growth. In March you'll complete your spring self-assessment again (link in Canvas).
After you submit the self-assessment add the following to your ePortfolio:
The skills I am using so far are that I am able to communicate and ask for help when needed but I am also fine working independently to finish the projects. For example, I when I first started the internship, I was having trouble with the training modules, through asking questions of my supervisor and time, I was able to complete training.
Since the fall, I have become more confident in my ability to communicate and ask for help when needed, while also working independently to complete projects. For example, when I first started my internship, I struggled with the training modules. By asking questions of my supervisor and dedicating time to understanding the material, I was able to complete the training successfully. This experience has shown me that I am growing in my ability to seek assistance and work autonomously.
Some skills that I would like to work on and continue to grow in are being more involved at my internship site and asking more questions when I am confused rather than just working on it independently. To grow these skills, I will continue to ask questions so I can learn, and I will also continue to remind myself that I am part of the team and that my work makes a difference to the team.
Moving forward, I would like to work on being more involved at my internship site and asking more questions when I am confused, rather than trying to solve everything independently. To grow these skills, I will continue to ask questions to enhance my learning and remind myself that I am part of a team, and my contributions are valuable. This semester and after LHSI, I will focus on actively participating in team discussions and seeking feedback to ensure I am making a meaningful impact.
My internship has helped me gain a better understanding of my future career and work environment, by allowing me to get hands-on experience doing work that pathologists do. In pathology as a whole, doctors must spend time study and analyzing tissue sample under a microscope. In other words, it is a common task that will be performed daily.
Reflecting on my October experience, my internship has significantly deepened my understanding of my coursework and major this spring semester. By applying theoretical knowledge from my classes to real-world scenarios, I have gained a more practical perspective on forensic pathology. For instance, working with tissue samples and using a microscope has reinforced my learning about histology and pathology. Additionally, the hands-on experience has helped me grasp complex concepts more effectively, making my coursework more relatable and easier to understand. This integration of practical skills and academic knowledge has been invaluable in solidifying my career goals and enhancing my overall educational experience.
