This is an example of one of the activities I have done with my students
Since the Fall of 2022, I have been an Academic mentor for the Anatomy class at IUPUI. This position is held through the Bepko Learning Center. Each week, I lead a mentoring session, and a recitation class, and hold a 1 on 1 tutoring hour. Anatomy is one of the toughest freshman classes offered at IUPUI, and the sessions I hold are meant to increase students' knowledge and understanding of key concepts. Academic mentoring is a free program designed to enhance understanding of course content and raise grades while working collaboratively with peers.
The OTEAM is an undergraduate student leadership group dedicated to engaging new students, along with their families and guests, as they attend orientation and begin classes at IUPUI. Before the semester starts, OTEAM leads a welcome week for Freshmen called Bridge week. All of these classes go throughout the semester and OTEAM leaders mentor their classes. At OTEAM, we serve as advocates for the interests, needs, and rights of first-year students. I mentor for Dr. Michael Yard's first year seminar titled: Exploring Health Professions. This was actually the FYS I was in as a freshman and is what got me into public health! Nothing is as rewarding as seeing the growth of my students as they start their college career and blossom both socially and academically.
My FYS students from Fall 2022!
My first post as an Ambassador. This was during National Public Health week, and I answered the question: "Why public health?"
The Fairbanks School of Public Health ambassadors serve as hosts and representatives of the school. Ambassadors meet with prospective students, join orientation activities, lead school tours, support outreach activities, and represent the school on social media. We each do weekly posts on social media platforms that come together on our Fairbanks Blog.Â
