Since starting this internship I have had a career path change. Originally, I chose to pursue a B.S. in Biology to set myself up on the pre-professional track for dental school. I am no longer interested in going to dental school at this time and have now decided to solely focus on pursuing a degree in psychology with the intentions of becoming a school psychologist. Different life events have occurred to me personally and in the world around me that has led me to this decision. One of the main reasons I wanted to be a dentist growing up, before I knew all the biology involved in dentistry, was to make people smile more. As silly as this sounds, I will still be reaching this goal in my new career path, just from a different perspective. I do see myself completing my biology degree at some point later on and potentially teaching in a high school because I am interested about the connection between biology and psychology.
One of my biggest strengths is my perseverance. Being able to persevere through difficult situations and time periods in my life, along with the daily struggles involved with being a student-athlete have gifted me with skills like time management. There are some days when I leave my apartment at six in the morning and I don’t get back until 10:30 at night after my chemistry lab. On these days, I preserve and know that every single task I am doing I enjoy or will lead me to my end goals. When kinks in my day arise I have to make quick decisions and problem solve with limited time in order to complete all of my tasks. My strength of perseverance, and the skills that come along with it, are transferable to working as a team since it will be important to persevere and use all my resources to make informed decisions quickly.
Being able to convey my ideas efficiently and effectively is another one of my strengths that is required in team settings. I often find myself in leadership roles in group work or when a decision is being made among myself and my friends. As an effective communicator I am able to clearly identify what needs to be solved and the best way to explore the options. I listen to my peers, take into consideration their opinions, and then describe what I think the best route to continue with is. Having this skill is transferable in the internships since it will be important to have the ability to communicate my opinions and communicate as a group effectively.
I have had various experiences in service industries which correlates with my passion to serve. This internship is my first experience in a research lab and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. My professional and research skills have expanded as a result of this internship and I am excited to continue learning more throughout the duration of the year.
I have worked as a waitress at many companies since 2017. I first started at Bob Evans and most recently worked at Brew link Downtown. At all of these places I learned how to work with others in different populations of people. I entered orders, prepared and delivered food and beverage orders, and processed payments. I handled as many as 40 people at once while continuing to give service beyond expectations. In this setting I learned how much I truly enjoy serving others. These experiences also gave me the opportunity to increase my interpersonal relations with those around me and also strengthen my skill set in multitasking and efficiency.
At Excellence in Dentistry in Troy, OH from 2018-2019 I worked as a hygiene assistant. Throughout my time there I absorbed more information about dentistry than I knew existed. Functionally, I was tasked with making whitening trays and mouth guards, assisting in periodontal charting and x-rays, and applying fluoride. Occasionally I would be asked to step in and take notes for the doctors so I quickly learned the vocabulary required. I worked with patients of all ages and learned vital skills required for interactions with patients in a professional setting. Thankfully, I was also given the opportunity to observe the doctors as they preformed various procedures including, fillings, crowns, and implantations.
Currently I am employed on campus as a front desk associate at The National Institute of Fitness and Sport. Although this job does not correlate with my career goals, it fits well with my schedule and is very convenient as it is on campus. I have also really enjoyed my time working at NIFS and meeting the members. I have learned that it is a great place to network as a lot of the medical and dental students go there to workout.
