I am an undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Health Services Management (HSM). Growing up I always dreamed of being a Dental Hygienist. I was fascinated with all the tools and I thought their work had the appearance of being fun. After my sophomore year, I realized that direct patient care wasn't for me. After learning about HSM, and all the job and career options that are available, I knew this was the right choice for me. Healthcare will always be around and jobs will be in demand and I am able to go into many fields with a diverse degree. I am eager to learn and explore new opportunities that I am able to contribute toward work that I am passionate about. What gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing I can make a difference in the work I can do, and with this degree I am sure to make a difference.
Throughout this major, I have learned that communication is key to maintaining and building new relationships. Although we're all going into the work force and with that comes competition, this major has taught me to make the most relationships I can, so I can be connected with the right people. Being a leader is one of the main components of this degree. I have used that skill in many classes with group projects and outside of school in my part time job as a server. Being able to step up when no one else can has been a strong suit of mine and I am willing to do that in any opportunity I get.
Overall, my journey through this major, I have not only learned that I appreciate to work as a team and collaborative environments that bring people together, but also having those interpersonal skills to bring to the table are valued in any organization. In the future, I hope to able to be a part of a mission that coordinates with my values, encourages personal growth and makes a positive impact on my community.
