About Me

I am a junior majoring in health sciences and aspiring to become a physician associate. I've chosen this academic path to play my part in the medical field and bring some level of healing and relief to humanity. With the speciality flexibility benefit in the PA profession, I would be able to work in various fields and be able to help a vast population of people with different medical histories and backgrounds. Alongside this moral initiative, I would continue to strive to use my training and abilities to address the health issues present in the underserved and underrepresented communities.

This past semester, I have earned my certified medical assistant certification. I plan to implement my learned skills by working as full-time medical assistant this summer. I hope to gain patient care hours to expand my experience and skillset by fulfilling my position at a Windrose Health Network clinic in Indianapolis serving the local underserved population.

Teamwork

During my time working at Walgreens,  I believe I am efficient at performing my duties and fulfilling my given responsibilities. I also have grown to believe that communication is crucial when working in a team. Given  this, I always speak up if I am struggling with a specific task or am in need for some help. Also, in return, I also ask my team members if they need help with anything as well. While working in a team, I always remember to keep my respect when talking to any member of a group. Alongside proper manners, I always play my part to the best of my ability. I am reliable as well as I am punctual with my deadlines and have strong time management skills established through heavy workload and pressure induced environments in the pharmacy.

My Experiences

Starting off my bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, I was unsure if I wanted to pursue a medical career. To help give me an insight on being in a medical environment, I decided to volunteer at my local hospital, Community Hospital South. Though I was 17 at the time, I was still given the opportunity to help aid the nurses and the incoming patients during a anxious time in the pandemic. This role taught me confidence as it was my first times with patient interaction. Volunteering also allowed me to view health care in a different perspective and definitely reminded me of my passion to be in a medical team in the near future.

Soon after, I began my position at Walgreens as a pharmacy technician-in-training and cashier as I figured this role would provide some medically-related exposure. This position involved heavy communication and multitasking skills,  both of which  were greatly improved quite quickly.  Another skill I acquired through this was the meticulous attention to detail. Although I worked under the supervision of a pharmacist, it was crucial on my part to correctly fill and label prescriptions. Although those who are pursuing a medical pathway do not work as a pharmacy technician, unless becoming a pharmacist, I believe my  nontraditional experience with the pharmacology at Walgreens magnified the significance of another branch of healthcare for me.

Since the beginning of my journey at IUPUI, I have always been involved with my Sikh community through IUPUI's Sikh Student Association.  The initiative of the organization is to spread awareness about Sikhism in the diverse culture on IUPUI's campus. In 2022, I have been graciously accepted as the apparel manager and USG senator. I have grown up to be connected to my faith and one of the core fundamentals is to perform selfless service without any reward or personal gain. With this purpose, every month a meal is prepared and distributed in downtown Indianapolis to those who are homeless and/or in need of it. Connecting with peers of my generation, it is refreshing to incorporate my faith's core values into our lives. My value of selfless service is undoubtedly one of many reasons why I aspire to follow a career path into medicine. The clique saying of "wanting to help people" has been implicated in my life since as long as I can remember and is definitely a fundamental piece of my motivation for PA school.. Additionally, through the responsibility of my role in this organization, I maintained turning in needed paperwork, presentations, and/or other preparations in time for events punctually. In prospect, I plan to become the president of SSA for the 2023-2024 school year holding the initiative to bring my not only bring Sikh IUPUI students together, but to create a welcoming community to everyone encouraging education of the faith.

Throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, I am participating as a member of the IUPUI Pre-PA club. Through this event, I've created several connections to students following the PA route alongside me. In many ways, the involvement in this club allowed me to enhance my networking skills substantially. I have always been a shy person by nature, however the little push of getting outside of my comfort box was just what I needed to improve my confidence and communication skills from a professional standpoint. In the upcoming year, I hope to fill an executive board member position in the Pre-PA club in hopes of encouraging, guiding, and mentoring other students on the IUPUI campus considering the PA route.

This past semester, I was gratefully accepted as an IUPUI OTEAM member. OTEAM is a group of students who welcome the incoming freshman, or Jaguars, to the IUPUI campus carrying the roles of leading their mentees through the orientation process and easing the transition into university. This opportunity allows me to showcase my appreciation to my experience and resources at IUPUI as well as guide those following in my similar footsteps.  In the upcoming, I will be up taking a freshmen year seminar mentor position in which I will utilize my leadership skills by being a guider and resource for the students in my section.

A collective group of my students on campus and I established the IUPUI Punjabi Cultural Union (PCU) this past spring with the objective to celebrate and spread our culture on IUPUI grounds. I incorporate my leadership, communicative, and presentation skills through the execution of PCU's events as the secretary. In the coming year, I have graciously accepted the offer of becoming president of the club.
