I signed up for the Public Health Student Volunteer Corps to get more hands-on PH experience. So far, my favorite opportunity I did was packing about 750 COVID tests to send to schools in Marion County. This is the most direct way I have helped my community, so far. After enjoying my time at my worksite, I decided to minor in epidemiology to learn about this path in a more formal setting. University tends to make me tunnel-focus on tasks for school and work, but volunteering is a breath of fresh air. I enjoy helping others, so I plan to dedicate more time to volunteering next year, once I have a car. Most volunteer opportunities I am interested in are in the suburbs of Indianapolis, which isn't the most accessible on foot with my limited schedule.
The biggest challenge I have faced is believing in myself. At the beginning of my internship, I worried that my supervisor would be disappointed in my work. I have been growing in my ability to ask for feedback on my projects and ask clarifying questions. I have never been asked to make an edit that would take more than a week to correct. My fear of not being perfect often slows me down in turning in something good.Â
