About Me

Hi, my name is Ashley, and I am a Sophmore biology major on a premed track at IUPUI. I am hoping to go to medical school to become an allergist. I have severe food allergies, and my career goals are centered around helping kids navigate their allergies in the best way possible.

My Experiences and Skills

I have gained many skills from my three years working at Chick-fil-A and the seven years I have spent on the Windsor Road Christian Church worship team. At Chick-fil-A in Champaign, Illinois, I was a team member for a year before becoming a Certified Trainer. As a Certified Trainer I have the task of training new team members on all of the front of house processes and procedures. This job has grown my teaching skills and forced me to branch out of my comfort zone. Through being a Certified Trainer I have learned what teaching methods work and do not work, and in addition I have learned how to change the teaching style when something is not clicking with the new team members. It has shown me how many people have different learning styles and how to combat that when trying to maintain consistency throughout the restaurant. Additionally, have been a part of the worship ministry at Windsor Road Christian Church in Champaign, Illinois for seven years. This includes my time as a member of the student worship team, the leader of the student worship team, and a member of the adult worship and tech teams. In these roles I have learned a variety of skills. As a member of the student worship team, I learned new musical skills with the piano and expanded my vocal skills. I have continued to utilize these over the past several years. Being the leader of the student worship team during a COVID year taught me a lot, and although the experience was not all that I had hoped for, I learned new skills regardless. First, I learned how to plan outdoor worship services and summer events and how to coordinate rehearsal times around everyone's busy schedules. One of the main skills I took away from my time as the leader of the student worship team was leadership. I learned how to lead gently, humbly, and by example. Finally, I learned good communication skills and found out through trial and error what worked for my team and what did not. Being a member of the adult worship team at Windsor Road has taught me how to work and communicate with people from all different ages and backgrounds. Finally, running the camera for live streamed services on Sunday mornings has gotten me out of my comfort zone. This role has taught me more about the technology we use week in and week out and how to properly run and manage it.

Teamwork

My experiences at Chick-fil-A and Windsor Road have taught me a lot about teamwork. The most important thing that both of them have taught me is that there is no I in team, and nothing is ever possible with just one strong person to carry the team. It is important that all team members contribute to the overall whole of the team. Everyone is an asset to the team no matter how great or small of a contribution they make. As a leader at both places, I am aware of how imperative it is that all team members are compatible and able to work well together. These experiences have also taught me that being a team member under someone else's authority can be challenging at times. Often decisions are not made in the time frame or way that I would have preffered, and that is frustrating. However, being a good team member is learning how to roll with the punches and go with the flow even if something is not being done how you would like it to be.
