I am currently a student working towards my Bachelor's of Science psychology degree. After graduation, I want to work towards getting my PHD in School psychology. Throughout my internship I have had the opportunity to talk to many licensed psychologists doing the things I hope to achieve someday. I am nervous about pursuing this as a career, as I know it is a long and hard path, so to solidify my goals this year I am going to graduate school workshops, talking to our career services, and continuing to learn from the people around me within my internship. Before starting my internship, I wasn't entirely sure what type of degree I wanted to pursue after my bachelors degree. I knew I wanted to work with children, but was unsure what degree would help me get to a point where I could do so. I have discussed this topic with many people who work above me. They have told me their paths to where they are today, and in doing so introduced School Psychology to me. I can honestly say that this degree is something that sparked my interest immediately, and after doing some research myself, I truely believe that obtaining a PHD in School Psychology is a step I want to take.
This internship has instilled confidence in me, my decisions, and my abilities. I can honestly say that I feel like I now have a greater understanding of what I want to do for my career and the steps needed to accomplish this.
After the conculsion of LHSI, I will continue my work with Dr. Ashley McGinn over the summer and into next school year. I am thankful to be given the opportunity to continue learning under her and the other amazing mentors that I have gotten a chance to work with this year. I will also continue to look for other opportunities as I start applying for graduate Programs this fall.
My major goal for this internship was not only to learn about Autsim and evaluations, but also to learn more about the steps it took in order for these doctors to get where they are. I have made excellent progress on this front, and hope to continue learning more as my experiences continue. Learning and deciding what schools I want to apply to this fall is a huge step for me, and I am confident in my decisions moving forward.
Learning Goal #1: Learn more about steps taken to reach where my supervisors are..
Relevance: This goal will help me to plan out the next steps on my academic journey.
Action Plan:
1. Will work with multiple psychologists and learn about their career paths
2. communicate with other psychologists on the floor
Progress: I have made significant progress on this goal. I have talked to many people who work at my internship site, and in doing so, I have learned the many different ways that people got to where they are. I was nervous at first to bring up questions about people's academic histories, but everyone I talked to was more than willing to tell me where they succeeded and troubles they came across. To continue these conversations, I may ask more about where exactly they went to college and how they felt their path has helped them today.
Learning Goal #2: Better myself at receiving feedback and adapting answers to better work with said feedback.
Relevance: This goal will help me gain the experience to accept feedback in a professional setting and adapt my
work going forward.
Action Plan:
1. With research projects there will be feedback given.
2. The qualitative project will be given a newsletter.
3. Quantitative research evaluations.
Progress: Throughout my experiences, I was given the oportunity to work on countless projects including a Newsletter for the Parent Child Interaction Therapists, participant recruitment fliers, many annotated bibliographies, and much else. In every instance I was given the chance to ask for feedback and have learned how to better ask questions regarding what needs to be done. I was given feedback that I was able to correctly apply to my work in every one of my projects. This has severely helped build my confidence both in my work and in asking questions when I do not understand how to approach something.
Learning Goal #3: Learn more about the steps in psychological research and how changes are made.
Relevance: This goal will help me to learn about the steps in psychological research, which I will likely have to conduct in some way in my later academic years.
Action Plan:
1. Sitting in on Autism Evaluations.
2. Train with my supervisors on upcoming research systems.
3. Working on the CITI Training and human subjects requirements
4. Collect data, analyze, and prepare manuscripts and presentations.
Progress: I have had the opportunity to help write many annotated bibliographies. This means that I have been reading many psychology research studies and learned much about how these studies where conducted, what helped them to succeed, and the challenges that many researchers face. I was given CITI Training that helped me understand all of the requirements that are needed for human subject research.
Learning Goal #4: Learn more about Autism Evaluations.
Relevance: This goal will help me to learn if this is something that I want to pursue in the future.
Action Plan:
1. Training on ADOS.
2. Opportunities to observe different types of autism evaluations.
Progress: I can confidently say that I feel as though I have learned so much about neurodevelopmental disorders and autism assessment. Throughout my internship I have sat in on many traingings that are meant to help doctors acheive their goals. I was able to sit in on many autism assessments by several different doctors who not only were willing to show me how they go about each step of the process but explained any concepts I was confused on. I saw many different kinds of assessments.
So far throughout my internship I have used the following skills:
After you submit the self-assessment add the following to your ePortfolio:
Communication
I have had the opportunity to communicate with many different psychologists and patients both in and out of a clinical setting. For example, I was recently given the opportunity to sit in on an autism evaluation and communicate with both the psychologist preforming the evaluation for asking questions and giving observations, but also had the opportunity to interact some with the child to get a sense of what we were looking for.
I have been able to use this skill the most within my internship and have grown using this skill significantly. I learned have been given the opportunity to discuss many different topics including schooling, academia, and career paths with many different individuals. I feel as tho my confidence has grown as conversations come easier and I have less fear of starting conversations, especially when I do not understand what is expected of me.
Integration and Application
I have had the opportunity to work with data entry and analyzation to understand common occurrences within autism that was diagnosed at the clinic. This includes information about statistics that I have previously learned from my classes to better understand the data that we had. I am continuing to learn how to do statistical analysis and grow within this part of the field. I have also used previous understands about autism to better understand what is going on during the clinical evaluations while continuing to apply that information to new experiences.
Independence
Previous to this internship, I expected to have problems working independently on projects due to the large amount of new material. However, I surprised myself. I was given new material on a application I had never used before and had fear that I would need large amounts of help to understand what I was looking at. Instead, I was able to complete all of the work relatively easily using methods I was able to figure out. I was even able point out mistakes that I had found in the formatting that was seen. All of this allowed me to complete the task on time and effectively.
I feel as though I need to continue to work on independence. Though much of my current work is remote, I feel as though it can be difficult to continuously work solo on projects. I will work to find more motivation for my work as I continue to work on solo projects. I will also try to craft a more structured routine of work and school to improve independence.
I plan to continue working on the following:
Attendance and Punctuality
I plan on working on not only being on time, but being early for meetings and deadlines to prevent procrastination.
This internship has felt like an extension of my classes. I am learning more about research methods in psychology, given hands on opportunities to see how autism presents in children of different ages, and learn about statistical analyses. I was given the chance to work in many situations in both clinical and professional circumstances that has helped me decide future plans and deeper understanding of how the field of psychology can be used.
