The RSA-Lab team collaborated with the IEEE GRSS Lahore Chapter to organize the "Geoscience and Remote Sensing" track at the Horizons of Information Technology and Engineering 2024 (HITE-2024) conference. Two research papers from the RSA-Lab were accepted and published at this IEEE-indexed conference, showcasing the lab's contributions to the field.
Additionally, the team organized a hands-on workshop titled "Remote Sensing Workshop," designed to train participants in analyzing remote sensing data using Python. As part of the conference program, Dr. M. Adnan Siddique delivered an insightful talk on "Oil Spills in Pakistan's Exclusive Economic Zone: How Remote Sensing is Helping Us Monitor Marine Pollution," highlighting the critical role of remote sensing in addressing environmental challenges.
To educate the school going kids about Remote Sensing, RSA-Lab in collaboration with GRSS Lahore Chapter organized an engaging session where they explored basic components of satellites, their launching mechanisms, and the interpretation of remote sensing imagery. The session included hands-on exercises using โGoogle Earth Proโ software, allowing participants to explore locations of interest, making the event more engaging. Additionally, children participated in an exciting activity where they identified alphabets in remote sensing imagery (provided by NASA).

IEEE GRSS REACT technical committee organized a series of expert panel discussions in Lahore, Pakistan, focusing on the critical question: How can geosciences and remote sensing facilitate informed and sustainable climate action? Pakistan ranks high among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Each discussion brought together 4-5 experts from the fields of remote sensing technologies, business leaders and socio-economists working on the mitigation of climate change impacts in Pakistan. Several students and members of the general public also attended these sessions. The key takeaways from these panel discussions โ apart from a clear realization that remote sensing technologies can play a powerful role by enabling the policymakers to understand the local impacts and make informed decisions โ include I) the need to have more data sharing agreements, particularly with public authorities, II) establish standards for data and analyses, and III) increase the momentum of North-South research collaborations. A bottom-up approach is suggested, with all stakeholders being urged to be more proactive and deliver on quantifiable outcomes (such as successful GRS research projects, development of climate-centric EO products for the local market, and socio-economic modeling for evaluating the progress towards sustainable development goals).

There is a growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the wake of warming over the HKH in general. Around 2420 glacial lakes have been identified in the HKH part in Pakistan. Depending on the volume and size of an ice or moraine-dammed glacial lake, temperature and precipitation, and geomorphological parameters of the terrain, mechanical failures may cause breach in its wall. Consequently, a sudden discharge of millions of cubic meters of meltwater and debris can occur in a short time interval, with catastrophic impact on the socioeconomic life of the downstream communities. The webinar explores the use of machine learning in this context. The work is targeted at developing algorithm(s) to detect/classify glaciers & glacial lakes using imagery from spaceborne radar as well as optical sensors, estimation of surface velocity over glaciers, and in the ongoing run aiding the development of an explainable AI tool that computes the GLOF hazard potential of a glacier.
