Volterra AD 1398
Volterra not only preserves traces of the Etruscan and Roman past, which can be admired in the walls and in the theater, but also a widespread patrimony of churches and dating back to the Middle Ages. On the second and third Sunday of August the whole city takes a step back over 600 years, and turns into “Volterra AD 1398”. For 23 years the streets of the village have been the backdrop for artisans and merchants, parades of commoners and nobles, jugglers' shows. In the Parco di Castello, at the foot of the imposing Medici Fortress, ladies and knights, flag-wavers and crossbowmen take turns giving proof of their dexterity, musicians who delight the large audience. Walking slowly along steep uphill streets, the tourists of 2000 get confused with the Volterra people of 1398. The swarm of crowds swaying from one bench to another, dispersing where the alleys open up into airy squares dominated by churches and palaces. The scenery around the village is completed by the Balze, the rugged and steep spurs of rock that dominate the Val di Cecina.
Volterragusto
Volterragusto will be a special edition with the theme "FOOD IS CULTURE" which will combine the local gastronomic wealth with the historical, architectural and museum heritage. The market exhibition of white truffles and products from the Alta Val di Cecina has been taking place for 23 years in the splendid setting of Piazza dei Priori in the historic center of Volterra, under the Loggias of Palazzo Pretorio. Local producers offer the food and wine excellences of the area: wine, oil, cheeses, meats and chocolate. Other contemporary events enhance the territory and its traditions.
The new edition of 'Volterragusto', the market exhibition dedicated to white truffles and, in general, to the typical products of the Alta Val di Cecina, is particularly awaited.
