Jared Cantrell (Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships & Innovation)

Jared Cantrell serves as the Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships and Innovation within the Office for Research at Idaho State University and has held a joint appointment with the Idaho National Laboratory since January 2025. Transitioning from his previous role as Laboratory Manager and Research Engineer, Jared now bridges the gap between high-level institutional strategy and technical execution. Building on his Master's in Civil Engineering, which focused on seismic and structural engineering, he is currently a PhD candidate in Engineering and Applied Science. He intends to defend his dissertation by the end of the year, with his research heavily emphasizing experimental structural engineering.

In his current capacity, Jared provides administrative and technical oversight for premier research facilities at ISU, including the Structural Lab (SLAB), the Structural Dynamics Laboratory, the Civil Engineering Large-Scale Laboratory, the Gaming and Visualization Laboratory, and the Disaster Response Complex (DRC). His leadership, which also includes helping to stand up the Institute for Construction Education, Research, Technology, and Sustainability (ICERTS), ensures these facilities remain at the forefront of experimental research and regional innovation.

A native of Mountain Home, Idaho, Jared has been a mainstay at Idaho State University since 2013. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering with a minor in Marketing in 2018, followed by his Masters in 2021. His academic progression is grounded in a unique blend of rigor and hands-on technical expertise; he previously worked as an apprentice diesel mechanic at Nelson Fleet Service and gained operational and management experience at Environmental Abrasives Warehouse. This diverse foundation allows him to interpret complex engineering plans, manage large-scale project scheduling, and adapt rapidly to evolving technical challenges.

Jared’s competitive spirit was highlighted in the 2017 Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge, where his team placed third in their section. Outside of his professional and academic pursuits, he remains deeply connected to his Idaho roots, enjoying farming, ranching, snowmobiling, and the state’s various outdoor recreation opportunities.
