Jared Cantrell (Manager/PhD Student) 

Jared is a full-time Manager in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at ISU. He is also a graduate student at Idaho State University. He is currently the lab manager for Structural LAB (SLAB) and Structural Dynamics Laboratory. Jared is from Mountain Home, Idaho. He has attended Idaho State University since graduating high school in 2013. He completed a bachelors in Civil Engineering and a minor in Marketing in 2018. Jared competed in the 2017 Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge as a part of one of 26 qualifying teams placing third in his teams section. Jared has previously worked as an apprentice diesel mechanic at Nelson Fleet Service in Boise, ID, where he learned a great deal about general mechanical and hydraulic systems operation/repair. During his time at Environmental Abrasives Warehouse he learned operation of various equipment, while learning scheduling and management skills. Through various other terms of employment Jared has gathered skills in analyzing and interpreting plans, scheduling/estimating jobs accurately, and has learned to adapt to new jobs quickly through observation. Outside of work, he enjoys putting effort and time into farming and ranching, also various sports, along with snowmobiling, camping, and fishing.


Katie Hogarth (Deputy Lab Manager/PhD Student)

Katie is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. She is originally from McKinney, Texas and has been attending Idaho State University since graduating high school in 2016. Katie has been a research assistant on the “Emergency Training Complex” project funded by the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) at Idaho State University. Her previous work experience includes the Summer Camp at ISU. Katie is also a student athlete on the Idaho State Women’s Soccer Team. Outside of school, Katie enjoys playing guitar and piano, cooking, camping, and traveling. 

Hana Al-Ghanim (PhD Candidate) - Qatar University 

Hana is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal at Qatar University. Hana's PhD research is in retrofitting of concrete structures using titanium alloy bars and CFRP. 

Suraj Prasad Dahal (Masters Student

Suraj, a graduate student pursuing an MS in Civil Engineering at Idaho State University, is originally from Damak, Nepal. He completed his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University in 2017. He has 5 years of working experience on post-earthquake rehabilitation projects for the National Reconstruction Authority, instruction of structural engineering courses for diploma-pursuing students, and as a consultant civil engineer designing residential and commercial buildings for private firms in Nepal. His research interest in structural and seismic engineering best suited the MS course at Idaho State University. Apart from academics, he loves trekking, traveling, and exploring different places.

Anjan Koirala  (Masters Student) 

Anjan is a graduate student at Idaho State University originally from Chitwan, Nepal. Currently he took a transfer from Lamar University. He completed his undergraduate degree from Advanced College of Engineering and Management, affiliated to Tribhuvan University in year 2021. Upon graduation, he got an opportunity to work as a civil site engineer at the Project Office of Urban Development and Building Construction where, he got an opportunity to supervise the complete project of construction of Hospital Building. After four years of undergraduate study in Civil Engineering and some post-graduation work experience in the same, he became familiar with the fundamentals of structural engineering and feel thoroughly content with the decision to choose Earthquake and Structural Engineering as his career and academic option. Other than that, He loves playing chess, online games, cricket and love to explore new places.


Manish Acharya (Masters Student)

Manish Acharya, a graduate student at Idaho State University, is a native of Sindhuli, Nepal. He completed Bachelors of Civil Engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal, in 2019. After working for 3 years on government and non-government projects, he has now made up his mind to get a master's in structural engineering to boost his academics. He is fully determined to master cutting-edge technologies that have been applied to or are the subject of research in developed nations. After finishing his studies, he intends to go back to the construction industry. In addition to this, he enjoys travelling, watching movies, and hanging out with friends and family.

Aashish Deo (Masters Student)

Aashish is a graduate student pursing his Masters in Civil Engineering at Idaho State University. He has done his Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal. He has the work experience regarding the field of Construction of Pre-stressed Bridge. He is interested to learn about modern methodologies regarding the design, simulation and monitoring of Structures. He wants to work as a consultant in the field of Structural Engineering by involving in research in on-going advancement in the field of structures at Idaho State University. Apart from this, he loves to trek, sing and cook dishes of his home country.

Jose Duran (MS Student)

Jose was born in Tijuana, Mexico and raised in San Diego, CA. He studied Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from which he graduated in 2017. During his last quarter at UCSD he was hired as a design engineer by Fyfe Company, the market leader in implementing fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) technology for the retrofit and repair of existing non-ductile concrete structures. Upon graduating from UC San Diego, Jose transitioned to a full-time position with Fyfe and in September of 2018 relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to spearhead Fyfe’s business development efforts in Northern California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona. After some time in the industry, he decided to pursue a master’s in engineering and found the graduate program at ISU to be an ideal fit based on the faculty, research facilities and its hands-on approach. With the master’s degree in tow, he hopes to return to the West Coast and continue to work on the seismic retrofit and repair of existing structures. Outside of school, Jose enjoys cycling, camping, reading, playing soccer, and hanging out with his Golden Retriever, Honey.

Pawan Bhattarai  (MS Student)

Pawan, a graduate student at Idaho State University, is pursuing a master's degree in civil engineering. He hails from Nepal, where he earned his bachelor's degree from Pulchowk Engineering Campus at Tribhuvan University. Following his undergraduate studies, he engaged in roles related to structural and earthquake engineering within both governmental and non-governmental sectors. After gaining practical experience in the field, he decided to elevate his academic journey, finding a perfect match in ISU. Currently serving as a graduate teaching assistant in the civil and environmental engineering department, his studies encompass advanced structural analysis, seismic engineering, and retrofitting techniques. Beyond academia, Pawan has a passion for travel, cooking, and trekking.


Samjhana Rajbhandari  (MS Student)

Samjhana was born and raised in Banepa, Nepal. After working closely on post-earthquake house restoration in severely earthquake-affected areas for the National Restoration Authority of Nepal, she developed a deep passion and enthusiasm for the structural aspects of civil engineering. She worked in post-earthquake rehabilitation for a few years after earning a three-year technical high school diploma in civil engineering at Tribhuvan University's Thapathali Campus. Subsequently, she earned an undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Purbanchal University's Khwopa Engineering College. She worked for a private engineering firm in Nepal after finishing her undergraduate degree until coming to Idaho State University in the fall of 2023. She has been in the engineering sector for about 6 years, having graduated from high school. Her research focuses on structural engineering, earthquake engineering, and local building materials for earthquake-resilient constructions. Aside from studying, she enjoys traveling and discovering new locations. She has also trekked to Poonhill in Nepal, where one can witness the dawn over the Annapurna Range, one of the world's most stunning mountain ranges.


Raghav Sharma (MS Student)

Raghav is a graduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a Master’s degree in civil engineering. He completed his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal, in the year 2020. He was always fascinated by the towering skyscrapers, mansions, bridges, and flyovers that dotted the landscape. So, from a very early age, he knew that he wanted to be a structural engineer and help build the infrastructure that would shape the future of his country. After his undergraduate degree, he worked as a structural engineer at an engineering consultant in Kathmandu, where he designed and supervised the construction of several residential and commercial buildings. At this point in his career, he wants to get exposed to the field of structural engineering through a research oriented practical learning environment that ISU provides. He is particularly interested in the fields of seismic engineering, structural health monitoring, and bridge engineering. Apart from academics, he loves reading novels, getting involved in philosophical discussions, playing guitar and singing, and playing soccer.


Kshitiz Raisal (MS Student)

Kshitiz was born in Biratnagar, where he completed his high school education at Arniko +2 Science. He completed his Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Khwopa College of Engineering,Tribhuvan University, in 2017. After that, Kshitiz worked at Lower Likhu Hydropower (28.1 MW) as a site engineer, where he was assigned to the tunnel, power house, and surge shaft components for monitoring the construction work. After that, Kshitiz worked as a government engineer for more than 3.5 years. Going through his professional journey, he came to find out and work on some phenomenal engineering work. However, he figured out some setbacks to the orthodox constructional approach back in his home country. After being involved in field work for almost 6 years, Kshitiz wants to continue his academic journey as a Masters student and learn advanced structural and bridge engineering at a scrutinizing level. Additionally, Kshitiz is quite passionate about swimming, cricket, hiking, and music.


Arpan Adhikari (Undergraduate Student)

Arpan Adhikari, an undergrad student at Idaho State University, was born in Chitwan, Nepal. He completed his High School from Orchid Science College, Chitwan, Nepal and finds Mathematics and Engineering as interesting subjects. He hopes to open an engineering form and work on various interesting engineering projects. Apart from study and work, He likes travelling, playing soccer and basketball and love spending time with his friends. 

Joe Shurtleff (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Joe Shurtleff is an undergraduate research assistant for the Disaster Response Complex (DRC). Joe grew up in rural southwestern Idaho where he helped build his family's construction business. As a self-employed business owner, Joe has been building custom agricultural buildings and fences for the last five years. After receiving an associate degree focusing on biology and natural resources from the College of Southern Idaho, Joe is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at ISU. He hopes to return to the work field and apply his skills to build custom homes and buildings, including tiny homes and other off-grid, sustainable dwellings. He enjoys gold panning, geology, camping and playing the guitar.

Pramesh Shah (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Pramesh Shah, originally from Nepal. Currently enrolled in a Computer Science program at Idaho State University. He has discovered his true passion in the world of app development, where he skillfully combines creativity with problem-solving. He is dedicated to making a meaningful impact through the creation of user-centric, top-notch applications. His vision extends to the exciting realms of artificial intelligence and augmented reality, where he aspires to pioneer new possibilities. As a valued member of a dynamic research team, Pramesh is fortunate to collaborate with the Dr. Rajiv Khadka and Dr. Mustafa Mashal, expanding his knowledge and contributing to cutting-edge advancements. Beyond his academic pursuits, His interests encompass travel, literature, Sci-Fi films, and a deep appreciation for music. In his leisure time, he enjoys engaging in sports and eagerly embraces novel experiences and exploration of uncharted territories.

Saugat Acharya (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Saugat Acharya, an undergraduate student at ISU is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He is originally from Nepal. He is mostly interested in the fields of Machine Learning, AI and Web Development. He will be working on the research team with Dr. Mustafa Mashal and Dr. Rajiv Khadka. Apart from academics, he is interested in going outdoors. He loves to play soccer and travel.

Prajita Budhathoki (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Prajita Budhathoki, originally from Kathmandu, Nepal, is presently an undergraduate student diligently working towards a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. She is a product of the esteemed National School of Sciences located in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, where she successfully completed her high school education. Prajita is passionate about engineering and architecture. She enjoys exploring the ins and outs of engineering and architecture and seeks to actively involve herself in its practical applications. In addition to her academic pursuits and professional endeavors, she likes playing basketball, traveling, adventures, and cooking. Prajita aims to deepen her understanding and interests of civil engineering by actively engaging in lab work and helping in research projects.

Mahesh Acharya (Deputy Lab Manager/PhD Candidate)

Mahesh is originally from Nepal, birthplace of Lord Buddha.  He completed his high school from St. Xavier’s college, Kathmandu. He is currently undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He is the recipient of the Fall-2018 CommUniversity Scholarship at Idaho State University. He is looking forward to learn modern engineering techniques used in developed countries like the USA and take that knowledge back to Nepal and help his country even if that’s a tiny bit. He is really impressed with the rumble strips on highways of the USA and wants to build on highways of Nepal. His only career goal is to help his country by applying the knowledge that he gained while gaining degree in Civil Engineering. Besides engineering, he loves playing soccer, travel, trek and camp.

Saksham Maharjan (Masters Student)

Saksham Raj Maharjan is from Kathmandu, Nepal. He has completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 2017 from National College of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Since then, he worked as a full time Civil Engineer in Hydro-Consult Engineering Limited in Nepal where he worked for the various hydropower projects. He was involved in various phases of hydropower projects such as feasibility study, detailed design study and construction supervision. Having worked in field for years, he is now willing to continue his education in Structural Engineering as it is his area of interest and hence joined Idaho State University. His research interest lies in Structural and Earthquake Engineering, Retrofitting techniques and civil engineering construction materials along with structural design and analysis. Besides study, he likes travelling and hiking. 


Ujwal Sharma (Masters Student)

Ujwal was born in Solukhumbu, Nepal, where Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world is present. He completed his high school at St. Xavier’s College in Kathmandu after which he joined Khwopa College of Engineering in Bhaktapur, Nepal to pursue his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. After completing his degree in 2017, he started working professionally as a Civil Engineer back in his home country. He has had experience working for both the government as well as private employers for nearly 5 years. After working in the field for almost 5 years, he ultimately decided to return to school. Given the modern techniques used in the sector of both academic as well as professional engineering in the US, he was interested in choosing the USA and most specifically, Idaho State University to pursue his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. During his free time, he loves to travel and hike. He has already been to places like Everest Base Camp, Namche Bazaar, and others back in his country and wants to explore places during his stay in America as well.


Kabiraj Phuyal (MS Student)

Kabiraj originates from Kathmandu, Nepal, a country known for its magnificent mountains. Currently, he is a master’s student studying civil engineering at Idaho State University. He completed his bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental Engineering from the same university. During his academic journey, Kabiraj has served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), where he contributed to the grading of papers for courses such as hydraulic design and geotechnical design. Additionally, he holds the position of Graduate Research Assistant (GRA), aiding in the Precast Design Studio Class laboratory.

Kabiraj’s interest in civil engineering was sparked by the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. Witnessing the limited number of engineers and insufficient modern technologies available to save lives, he recognized the importance of advancing earthquake-resistant design and structures. This experience fueled his desire to acquire extensive knowledge in the field.

Apart from his studies, Kabiraj has a diverse range of hobbies and interests. He has a deep passion for playing soccer, table tennis, and chess. Exploring the outdoors through hiking is another activity that brings him joy. Furthermore, Kabiraj actively engages in supporting those in need and demonstrating his commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

Sindi Banda  (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Sindi Banda is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business Informatics . He is from Zambia, Africa. He came to America in the spring of 2020. Outside of school, Sindi loves to play video games, listen to music and play soccer. He joined the Gaming and Visualization Lab as an undergraduate research assistant  so that he can gain real world  experience that will enhance his knowledge and skills. 

Asa Flowers (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Asa Flowers is pursuing an Undergraduate Civil Engineering Degree at ISU. He discovered his love for engineering in high school physics and hopes he can pursue a career in the Treasure Valley area where he is from. Outside of school, his interests are mostly in music and movies, but he also enjoys spending time outside and bonding with his friends.

Bo Frasure (Undergraduate Student)

Bo is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. He was born in Pocatello, Idaho, and raised in various Pocatello construction sites. He hopes to found or join an engineering firm and tackle interesting projects. When he is not studying or working, he is enjoying the local mountains, target shooting, biking, and spending time outdoors with his family.


Durga Parajuli (Summer Intern)

Durga works with Drs. Ebrahimpour and Savage on her MS thesis. She is a temporary summer researcher in our group. Durga is originally from Nepal and is pursuing Masters in Science in Civil Engineering at Idaho State University. After completing bachelor’s in civil engineering from Tribhuvan University, she worked as civil engineer for 4 years. Her previous work experience includes design and analysis of steel and concrete structures, costing and estimation, report writing and teaching Etabs (Analysis tool). She is familiar with drafting and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Etabs, RAM, SAFE and ANSYS. She is working with Dr. Arya Ebrahimpour as GTA where grading homework is her major responsibility. She basically enjoys work associated with Finite Element Method hence she is modeling high pressure compressed air energy storage pressure vessel in ANSYS as her major project. Apart from engineering she loves cooking, dancing, reading and chess.


Yan Chen (MS student) - University of Canterbury, New Zealand

Yan is a master's student at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal at Idaho State University as part of the collaboration between the two universities. Yan is originally from China. She has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She has four years’ experience working as a structural engineer in Christchurch, New Zealand. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Civil Engineering (Earthquake Engineering) at the University of Canterbury. She is also a teaching assistant for the courses on Solid Mechanics and Structural Analysis at UC. She wants to help more students to have better understanding in structural engineering and build self-confidence. Her goal is to become a knowledgeable, experienced and responsible engineer. In her spare time she has always been involved in fitness, yoga and meditation. She also has great passion for billiard and skydiving.

Ahmad Zaied (MS Student)

I was born and raised in Kuwait. I have my associate degree in Mechanical Engineering from College of Technological Studies in Kuwait in 2011. After I worked in the field, I had a feeling that I am more interested in Civil Engineering field, so I decide to study abroad in the United States and get my degree in civil engineering. I graduated in 2019 from Idaho State University with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. After that I worked at a company in Florida where I did some feasibility study, planning, and design reviews by following the codes for construction in State of Florida. After working in the field in Florida, I see myself that I want to continue my education and do more research in structural engineering. I am very excited about my new journey for a master’s degree in civil engineering.

Uma Shankar Medasetti (PhD Candidate) 

Uma Shankar Medasetti is from a beautiful city in Southern India, Visakhpatnam. He finished his Bachelors in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Andhra Pradesh, India, and Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Bradley University, Illinois, USA.  After finishing his Masters, he worked as Software Developer for three years. With career interests in Robotics, he joined the Ph.D. program at Idaho State University with a primary focus in Disaster Management Robotics. He is currently a Research Assistant working Drs. Sebastian (academic advisor) and Mashal (supervisor) on the Disaster Response Complex project. His focus is on the Robotics side and he has been working in collaboration with INL aiming to build a robot that can perform tasks in hazardous radiation conditions in case of any disasters.  Apart from his studies, he is significantly involved in student Organizations. He served as Outreach Coordinator for Graduate Student Association (GSA) for the academic year 2018-19 and currently serving as ASISU Senator for Graduate Studies for the academic year 2019-20. During his free time, he loves to play cricket and cook food. 

Jack Dunker (MS Student) 

Jack is a Graduate student pursuing a Masters Degree in Health Physics to add on to his Bachelor’s in the same field. He has spent five years in freelance programming and game design with independent studios. With his experience in chemical and radiation safety he is aiming to blend his experiences in virtual world building and real world safety into a new professional career path. Besides making small apps and games at home, he also spend time painting and building miniatures.

Josh Peck (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Josh is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering. He was born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho and has been attending Idaho State University since August 2018. Outside of school, he loves just about anything that gets him into the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and camping.

Gage Cussins (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Gage is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Gage is originally from Melba, Idaho, where he graduated high school in 2018. After finishing his bachelor’s degree, he plans to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. Outside of academics, he loves board games, camping, fishing, and martial arts.

Anthony Droghei (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Anthony is an undergraduate student pursuing his bachelors in Civil Engineering. Anthony is born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho and has been attending ISU since 2018. He currently works for the Idaho Transportation Department assisting in the planning and surveying department. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he plans to pursue a master’s degree and a career in Civil Engineering. Outside of school, he enjoys gardening, sewing, wine making, and skiing.

Mahesh Mahat (Lab Supervisor/MS Student)

Mahesh is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He is originally from Kathmandu, Nepal. He joined ISU in January 2017. After 2015's Earthquake in Nepal, he got involved in Helping Hand Society where he got to analyze houses, buildings and work in retrofitting projects. His aim is to make buildings and structures more resistant to Earthquakes and other calamities. His research interest is in Structural and Earthquake Engineering. His previous work experience includes working as first batch of online tutors for ISU. Beside his studies, he is active member of different student organizations and clubs. Also, he has been elected as ASISU Senator representing College of Science and Engineering for academic year 2019/20. He likes playing ping pong, chess, travelling, and birding.

Usha Pant (MS Student)

Usha is from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. She studied GCE A levels from ST Xavier’s college, Kathmandu. She works as an undergraduate research assistant for Prof. Chikashi Sato for the project of Micro bio fuel cell. Her previous work experience includes working as an outreach assistant for the physics department, tutoring students as a peer tutor and grading home works. Her long term educational goal is to work as a research engineer and be involved in different types of projects that are intended to benefit people. Besides engineering, she loves listening to songs, traveling, reading books and cooking.

Aashish Thapa (MS Student)

Aashish Thapa is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He is from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is currently working in the project under the guidance of Dr. Bruce Savage. Thapa's previous work experience includes working as a math tutor for high school students as well as video class technician at Idaho State University. His long term goal is to build an engineering firm in Nepal and help developing various parts of the country. Apart from education, he likes to play cricket and soccer, listen to music and play online games with friends.

Daniel Garz (MS Student)

Dan is originally from Emmett Idaho and graduated from Idaho State University with a degree in civil engineering in the spring of 2019. He has completed three summers of internships at Forsgren and Associates out of the Boise office and one summer at the Idaho Transportation Department’s District Three office. He has experience with surveying, CAAD, quantity estimates, quality control of plan sets, design review, construction inspection, and culvert design. As an undergraduate student, Daniel has worked on a research project titled “Increasing the Output of a Hydraulic Turbine via a Venturi Valve” under Dr. Savage and presented his research at the Idaho Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR). Daniel competed for the Idaho State track and field team as an undergraduate and enjoys training and the outdoors.

Karma Gurung (MS Student)

Karma is originally from the Mountains of Nepal. He completed high school in Kathmandu, and has a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Idaho State University. Currently is an Engineer in Training and is pursuing a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Idaho State University. He is the recipient of the GATE scholarship and the Teaching Assistant for the Civil Engineering Material Class at ISU. His goal is to build infrastructures that can make people’s lives easier. Outside of school he likes to play soccer, travel and trek. He has been to the base of Everest and one-day plan to scale it. 

Ruchin Khadka (MS Student)

Ruchin resides from Nepal, the birthplace of Buddha. He completed his high school from St. Xavier’s College and Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu. Ruchin’s work experience includes teaching undergraduate engineering students and being involved in Red Cross Society.  He has also worked under the government of Nepal as a Civil Engineer after the 8.1Ms Gorkha Earthquake. Currently, he has transferred from San Jose State University to Idaho State University for better opportunities. He is working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Engineering Statics and Mechanics of Materials under Dr. John Gale and Professor Terence Keating. Outside of Engineering, he enjoys playing soccer, chess and computer games (DOTA, CS etc.). 

Corey Marshall (MS Student) 

Corey Marshall is a graduate student at Idaho State University. He is from Logandale, Nevada and received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Brigham Young University – Idaho. After receiving his bachelor’s degree Corey worked in Phoenix, Arizona where he was involved with the planning and construction of various environmental engineering projects. Corey is currently assisting his fellow students with their thesis research projects. Corey has an interest in structural and seismic engineering. After his school assignments have been completed, Corey enjoys camping, hiking and running. 

Max Casanova (MS Student) 

Maximilian (Max) is working with Dr. Arya Ebrahimpour, he is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal. He is from Simi Valley, California. He has a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Idaho State University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from ISU. Max’s work experience includes ISU engineering summer camp, teaching assistant, and research assistant on the “Mechanical Properties of High Strength Portland Cement Concrete with Recycled Asphalt Pavement as a Percent Replacement of Coarse Aggregate” project. Currently he is a research assistant on the “Effectiveness of High Early Strength Concrete Class 50AF with Polypropylene Fibers as a Cost-Effective Alternative for Field-Cast Connections of Precast Bridge Elements in Accelerated Bridge Construction” project at ISU, funded by the Idaho Transportation Department. In his free time Max enjoys bike riding and playing sports. 

Utsa Rashique (MS Student) 

Utsa is working with Dr. Arya Ebrahimpour, he is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal. He spent his childhood in Chittagong, Bangladesh- a city cradled by mountains and blessed by the ocean. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and joined Idaho State University as a Masters student from August 2017. His previous research experience includes the investigation of sway behavior of steel frames with semi-rigid connections and impact analysis on cricket helmets. Currently he is a research assistant on the “Effectiveness of High Early Strength Concrete Class 50AF with Polypropylene Fibers as a Cost-Effective Alternative for Field-Cast Connections of Precast Bridge Elements in Accelerated Bridge Construction” project at ISU, funded by the Idaho Transportation Department, and teaching assistant for the Structural Analysis course. Utsa pursues music as a hobby. He is a singer and pianist, and has a rock band back in his home country Bangladesh. 

Chris Clauson (MS Student)

Chris is working with Dr. Arya Ebrahimpour, he is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal. Chris resides from Grand Forks, North Dakota. He has been a student at Idaho State University for 2 years working towards his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He looks forward to attending ISU for his master’s degree in civil engineering starting January 2018. Chris’s previous work experience includes asphalt and concrete road construction, ISU engineering summer camp, research assistant on the “Effectiveness of High Early Strength Concrete Class 50AF with Polypropylene Fibers as a Cost-Effective Alternative for Field-Cast Connections of Precast Bridge Elements in Accelerated Bridge Construction” project through Idaho State University and the Idaho Transportation Department. Outside of school, Chris likes to play sports and spend time outdoors fishing.

Amin Torabi (PhD Candidate)

Amin is a Ph.D. candidate at Idaho State University, Civil Engineering department. He got his M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering Marine Structures, from Tarbiat Modares University, Iran. He has three years of experience in hydraulic structures design at ISU and one-year experience in Ocean engineering as a field engineer and offshore structural designer in some well-known company in Iran. His field of interest is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Currently, he is working on numerical modeling of structures as a research student, however, his PhD dissertation is in Hydraulics under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Savage. Outside of school he enjoys swimming and traveling. Amin briefly assisted Dr. Mashal and other students with finite element modeling of a precast concrete pier system in seismic regions. He worked under the supervision of Dr. Ebrahimpour for this project. 

Ali Shokrgozar (PhD Candidate)

Ali is being supervised by Dr. Arya Ebrahimpour.  He has worked with Dr. Mashal on several research projects. Ali is from Iran. Ali received his M.S degree in Civil Engineering-Structure in 2016 from Qazvin Islamic Azad University and joined Idaho State University as a PhD student from January 2018. He was recruited by one of the renowned engineering offices, which called Hetra, in Rasht city, which is in the north of Iran, as the Chief of Project. There he had different responsibilities including regular visits to construction sites to audit projects execution, planning design brief, implementing concrete-cement laboratory testing. His interests are Influence of Earthquake on special Structures, Structural dynamics and Earthquake engineering. Therefore, he worked on seismic performance of anchor bolts in cylindrical liquid storage tanks in his master degree and published some articles in national conferences and a self-teaching book for Crisis2007 software. Outside of school Ali likes to travel, listen to music and follow his favorite soccer team, called Damash Guilan, match.

Dr. Meesha Iqbal (MPH Student)

Meesha is a physician and a public health professional pursuing a full time Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the department of Community and Public Health, ISU. She is also a research assistant/ associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is from Pakistan and has completed fellowship in Community Medicine. Her areas of expertise include health systems strengthening, governance, private healthcare sector engagement, stakeholder, and health policy analyses. She has contributed to epidemiological assessments of the health status of vulnerable populations in the low- and middle-income countries, with a focus on child labor and domestic violence. She also has experience in community-based research including but not limited to outbreak investigation, environmental health programs and risk assessments, and participatory action research. She has worked as an external public health consultant with World Health Organization (WHO) and International Labour Organization (ILO), carrying out regional and national situational analysis related to engagement of private sector and domestic child labour. Her capstone project for MPH focused on epidemiological assessment of household and community preparedness to disasters and pandemics in the city of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and its suburbs; along with determining the perceptions and attitudes of the community to nuclear energy as a zero-carbon energy source. She led a one-day workshop in August, 2021 to train individuals for acute disaster response and preparedness and is now working with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in organizing a conference on disasters in Spring 2022. 

Nirajan Bhattarai (PhD Student) 

Nirajan Bhattarai is a PhD candidate pursuing doctoral research on drug discovery of possible modulators of neuronal ion channels, with a focus on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. He basically applies electrophysiology techniques, two-electrode voltage clamp and patch clamp, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), and modelling and molecular dynamics simulation with the aim of discovery of potential lead modulators against these ion channels, which may be implicated in various diseases states like Alzheimer's, addiction, hearing loss, pain, and even cancer.  Originally from Nepal, Nirajan graduated with a Pharmaceutical Sciences major in 2017 from the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University. He had gathered one year of teaching experience in his home country after graduation and joined Idaho State University as GTA and PhD student in Fall, 2018. Talking about his research endeavors, he has two publications, one dissertation research, five peer review for international journals and is currently working on three publications as part of his doctoral journey.  He was also past general secretary at Nepal Pharmacy Student’s Society and manager of its journal club, organizational activities, and community responsibilities.  Beyond wet lab and animal studies, he is determined to align his career in bioinformatics and computational research with a neuroscience focus. He joined our state-of-the-art visualization lab as a trainee for an AR/VR project in the summer of 2021, which is designed to aid training on disaster response. He wishes to apply these techniques in his own research endeavors for visualizing brain simulation, and docking and molecular dynamics simulations. 

Zach Free (MS Student)

Zach is a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student. He was born in Utah and has lived in multiple areas of Colorado, Utah, and Idaho, but claims Pocatello as where he was raised. His work for the department includes creating 3D visual representations of various settings to facilitate the Civil Engineering departments' projects. Outside school, he likes playing piano, reading, camping, and spending time with his family.

Shishir Khanal (Graduate Student Employee)

 Shishir is a research assistant, working with Dr. Mashal on various civil projects. He came to ISU from Nepal in the fall semester of 2015. At his first job as a Custodial Assistant for ISU Housing, he learned how to make goals and execute them. After that, as an Outreach Assistant, he realized what it means to know a subject matter while giving physics presentations to K-12 students. He graduated in May 2020 with a double major in Physics and Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. His research interest lies in Instrumentation, Measurement, System Identification, and Controls. He wants to develop a new perspective in the field of Controls Science. Apart from academia, he is actively involved in cultural and community programs. He has participated in events like Nepalese Night, International Night, Haunted Science Lab, Communiversity Picnic, etc as Singer, Dancer, Actor, Model, MC and Presenter. He is also passionate about cooking and has a signature chow-mein recipe 

Jeff Hansen (MS Student) 

Jeff Hansen has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University- Idaho and is currently working as a structural engineer for an engineering firm in his hometown of Idaho Falls. He studied the broad field of civil engineering and has decided to focus his studies on structures, but more specifically the seismic analysis and reactions in buildings, hoping to one day give back to the people of Africa where he once served a mission for his church. When not working or schooling, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two children. 

Lwin Htun  (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Lwin is from Long Island, New York. She is majoring in Civil Engineering at ISU. She will graduate in Fall 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and an Associate of Science in Physics. She also works as an Outreach Assistant for the ISU Department of Physics. She is the President of ISU World Fusion Dance Club where she teaches Fusion bellydance. Outside of school, she likes to play The Sims, Diablo, mostly PC games, go hiking, take road trips, learning new things, and trying new things. 

Rachel Brownell (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Rachel is currently an undergraduate student pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Idaho State University. Rachel is originally from Fall City, Washington and plays on the ISU soccer team. After finishing her Bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. Aside from school, Rachel loves to play soccer, hike, and spend time with family and friends.

Samantha Kerr (Undergraduate Research Assistant)

Samantha is perusing her bachelors degree in Civil Engineering at Idaho State University. Originally from British Columbia, Canada, she spent two years at Western Oklahoma State College earning an associates degree in physical sciences before attending Idaho State. After completing her bachelors, Samantha plans to work for three years and then to attain a masters degree. Samantha competes for the Rodeo team at ISU in the breakaway and team roping. Apart from her education, Samantha is passionate about traveling, the outdoors, cooking and of course working with her horses.

Anil Ghimire (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Anil Ghimire is originally from Nepal, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Anil finished his high school from Tilottama College, Butwal. He is currently an undergraduate student enrolled in Civil Engineering program at Idaho State University. He is interested in structural analysis and design. He wants to learn modern engineering and implement back in Nepal to make life easier of rural people. His career goal is to help his country as a senior engineer in the sector of designing and analyzing structures. Besides engineering, he loves to play cricket, soccer and cooking.

Pawan Acharya (Undergraduate Research Assistant)

Pawan is originally from the beautiful town Baglung, the western part of Nepal. He studied on a full scholarship provided by the Ministry of Education, Nepal from grade 5 to high school. Pawan is currently studying bachelors in Computer Science at Idaho State University. He likes biking, playing video games, listening to music, hiking and singing. Pawan was working as a Moodle Tester 2021,for Moodle Quality Assurance testing. He joined the visualization lab as a trainee for an AR/VR project working under Dr. Mashal on Sep 1, which is designed to aid training on disaster response. Pawan is willing to apply his knowledge and skills on this project and gain more experience in game development in a real world scenario.

Berenice Sosa Aispuro  (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Berenice is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a degree in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. Berenice is originally from Michoacan, Mexico but grew up in Weiser, Idaho. Her interest in Engineering began after attending a Health and Technology Conference hosted by ISU. Through research, she hopes to learn more about engineering and learn new skill sets. After finishing her Bachelor's Degree, she plans to pursue a career in engineering . Aside from academics, she enjoys reading, hanging out with friends and family, and being outdoors. 

Claire Haupt  (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Claire Haupt is from Connecticut, and has lived in Pocatello for almost 5 years now. She is currently pursuing her Mechanical Engineering degree here at Idaho State University. Her inspiration for becoming an engineer was when she attended an all-women engineering conference when she was 13. She has experience in Design (AutoCAD, AutoDesk Inventor, & SolidWorks), Lean Six Sigma, and Manufacturing Processes. She currently works as an Academic Coach for Disability Services on campus. After graduating, she intends to work as a Mechanical Engineer in a manufacturing setting; designing, improving conditions and providing quality leadership. In her free time she likes to hike, play video games, spend time with friends, and read.  

Maya Hernandez  (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Maya Hernandez is an undergraduate biochemistry major who grew up in The Dalles Oregon. She is a transfer student who has attended Idaho State University since 2019. Throughout her undergraduate experience, Maya has worked within the biology and chemistry office doing administrative work at George Fox University and has interned for the Army Corps of Engineers at The Dalles Dam over summer breaks. Most recently Maya has aided in writing a review paper on the advanced manufacturing of bulk hydrogen storage, worked for INL in their catalysis research lab, and currently works in a physical chemistry lab at Idaho State University researching the electrochemical, thermodynamic, and physical properties of tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium and Methyl-propyl-piperidinium containing ionic liquids in propylene carbonate solutions. Outside of school Maya enjoys reading, crocheting, and spending time with her dog.

Fernando Mendoza (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

My name is Fernando Mendoza, I am an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am originally from Oaxaca, Mexico.  I am currently part of the 3D Visualisation Research team and I also work at Premier Technology Inc, as a project manager engineering intern. After finishing my Bachelors degree, I plan to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering. I would also like to create an outreach program that would encourage the hispanic community to pursue a career in the STEM field.

Laura-Louise Alicke (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Laura is working with Dr. Bruce Savage. She is co-supervised by Dr. Mashal. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. She grew up in Germany and has spent the majority of her schooling there. She moved to the United States to finish her last two years of High School in Sheridan, Wyoming. It has always been a big dream of hers to study at a University in the US. She attended Texas A&M Commerce for one year before she transferred to Idaho State University her Sophomore year. She runs Cross Country and Track at Idaho State. Once she has completed her Bachelor's degree, she wants to continue her studies and pursue a Masters degree. Laura also enjoys the outdoors, she loves running and also likes traveling to many different places. 

Eric Cohen (Graduate Research Assistant) 

Eric is a MS student at ISU. He is extremely passionate about using data science (i.e., Python, MySQL, RStudio) and geographic information systems tools (i.e., ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) to solve environmental problems and make this world a cleaner, safer and more sustainable place. Also, he enjoys studying, analyzing and solving environmental policy problems at the local, regional, state, federal and international levels. Over the past 7 years, Eric has prepared NEPA and CEQA documents, facilitated the development of an interdepartmental sea level rise and climate change action plan, and performed GIS research for both academic, governmental and private sector institutions to help them resolve sustainability and environmental issues. Eric looks forward to using his skills to make this world a model of sustainability for future generations.

Henrik Karstens (International Exchange Scholar/MS Student) 

Henrik Karstens is an Exchange Scholar from Technische Universität Braunschweig in Hamburg, Germany. Henrik is a master’s student in structural engineering at Technische Universität Braunschweig. He will be staying at Idaho State University for two months, working on the PCI Big Beam Competition. Henrik likes traveling and outdoor activities. 

David Lucyga (International Exchange Scholar/MS Student) 

David Lucyga is a master’s student in civil engineering in the Department of Structural and Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany. He is an Exchange Scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University (ISU). David will be participating in the 2019 PCI Big Beam Competition – Forterra team at ISU. David likes travelling around the United States, running, and playing table tennis.

Alexander Gunkler (International Exchange Scholar/MS Student) 

Alexander Gunkler is a master’s student in Structural Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany. He is an Exchange Scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University (ISU). Alexander will be participating in the 2019 PCI Big Beam Competition – Teton Prestress Concrete team at ISU. He is interested to gain experience in large-scale testing in the Structural LAB (SLAB) at ISU. His previous work experience includes a half year internship in a special foundations building company at the harbor of Hamburg, Germany. Besides his studies, Alexander likes to travel, meet people, explore the nature, and outdoor activities such as hiking.

Wasan Alqaraini (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

My name is Wasan Alqaraini, Born and raised in Kuwait. Pursing bachelors in Civil engineering at Idaho State University. It's always been a dream to study abroad and have a unique experience. The main reason for joining the research team is to learn fieldwork and learn new skill sets.  After graduation, my dream job is to work at Kuwait Port Authority. Outside school, I enjoy cooking and exploring new travel destinations with different type of cultures and backgrounds.

Kshitiz Shrestha (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Kshitiz Shrestha is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He is from Kathmandu, Nepal. He is currently interning for ITD, inspecting culverts and fish passageways. Kshitiz’s previous work experience include working as technical writer for the ISU Accelerator Center and working as an ArcGis intern for NASA Develop. Outside of school he likes to play soccer, guitar and cook. Kshitiz is also an avid/seasoned traveler.

Ryan Golding (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Ryan Golding is an undergraduate student at Idaho State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in the Spanish language. He is from Bear Lake, Idaho and has been attending Idaho State since graduating high school.  His research includes studying alternative concrete mixes. He has experience working in a programmable machining laboratory and is eager to work and learn in the Structural Lab. Outside of school, he enjoys music, sports, automotive restoration and spending time with his two girls and wife.

Jordan Stearns (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Jordan resides from San Diego, California. He has been a student of Idaho State University for 5 years with the goal of obtaining his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. Jordan's previous work experience includes; construction of calf pens, a CPI for the Civil Engineering Dept. at ISU and a Building Manager for multiple apartments on campus. Outside of school, he loves to play basketball, volleyball and spend time outside. Jordan ensures his dedication, hard work and reliability to finish tasks as a team.

Garrett Thompson (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Garrett is from Pocatello, Idaho. He started his education at Idaho State University, looking towards completing his bachelor degree in civil engineering. He began attending ISU in the fall of 2014. Garrett’s previous work experience includes the assistant manager at the Craft Shop as well as a CPI for the civil engineering department at ISU. Outside of work and school, Garrett enjoys camping, skiing, and off-roading.

Irvin Aguilar (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Irvin is from Peru but resides in Pocatello, Idaho since 2012. He started pursuing a career in Civil Engineering at Idaho State University in Spring of 2015.  His previous work experience included conducting a research project during Fall 2016 which involved literature research on Accelerated Bridge Construction. He was also involved in working on shake tables. On his spare time Irvin enjoys traveling and playing soccer.

Michael Kelley (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Michael is an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering at Idaho State University (ISU). He is from the town of Orleans, on Cap Cod in Massachusetts. Michael is the President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at ISU.  He has hands-on skills in operating heavy machinery and construction equipment. 

Stephen Kelley (Undergraduate Research Assistant) 

Steve is an undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Idaho State University. He is working in the Structural Laboratory (SLAB) at Idaho State University to design and build a controller system for four small hydraulic actuators. 

Chris Baker (Research Assistant)

Chris is currently a non-traditional College of Education ISU student. He received his Bachelors of Science degree with a specialization in Animal Science from Abilene Christian University in 1999. He is a veteran and served in the United States Air Force as a B1-B Jet engine mechanic. He moved from Texas to Dubois, Idaho in 2001 to work with the United States Forest Service (USFS) as a Range Technician. In the summer months, he was performing range studies, packing horses, or GPS’ ing USFS assets. In the winter months, he became a GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst and database manager. In 2007 he then went on to obtain a GIS certification from the University of Denver to further integrate GIS technologies into the USFS disciplines. These included archeology, trails, mining, recreation, wildlife, range, law enforcement, wildfire management, and roads and bridge. Unfortunately, in 2012 Chris was part of a federal downsizing. He then pursued employment in the oil fields. In 2017 Chris decided two things. The first, he was going back to school (ISU). The second, Chris decided that the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle industry was going to be in demand and obtained his FAA 107 Remote Pilot Certification. He knew that his extensive technical background and tech-savvy GIS skills could further enhance his own UAV business. In 2018 Chris was employed by Dr. Marshal to assist with the Structural Lab (SLAB) equipment fabrication and technical repair. Currently, assisting in integrating GIS/UAV technologies into Idaho Transportation Department's research project titled "Development of an Inventory and Inspection database framework for an Asset Management Program for Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls" at ISU. Chris enjoys his solitude in Dubois, loves family, camping, fishing, and researching in his spare time.
