Food Issues 3 - Our school

IIS Scappi is a vocational high school based in Castel S.Pietro Terme (BO), Italy, founded in 1987, whose majors are hospitality management, cooking, pastry-making and service. It operates in a touristic area and has always managed to work together with several local businesses, restaurants, hotels and catering companies.

Thanks to its numerous partnerships both in Italy and abroad, its students have the constant chance to take part in work experiences and internships, improving their professional as well as soft skills.

CONCORSO SCAPPI

IIS Scappi is well-known for “Concorso Scappi”, a 7-day international competition for students from European vocational schools who get involved in cooking and bar challenges. In 2019 it celebrated its 21st edition, with 11 delegations from Italian schools and 13 delegations from foreign countries.

AEHT

The school belongs to AEHT (Association Européenne des Ecoles d'Hôtellerie et de Tourisme) and in 2019 a delegation travelled to Croatia to join the AEHT Annual conference and competition.

ERASMUS +

The school is very active in national and international competitions, and its students participate in several Erasmus+ projects such as work experience in Portugal (“Find your way in Europe”) and Malta. The institute also participates in the Erasmus+ project “TastER” to foster mobility for young people in Europe.

The school has its own vegetable garden that is part of the Slow Food network, it donates extra food to local charity organizations to contrast food waste, it celebrates the World Food Day and organizes workshops for the so-called EcoDay that takes place every year in the area.

The school takes part in competitions such as “ER-School of Food”, to discover and enhance local PDO and PGI products in creative recipes, and its students travel abroad with their chefs to present and cook Italian food as a way to celebrate and promote Italian culture.

In 2018 they travelled to Minsk, Belarus and in 2019 to Paris, France and joined the initiatives organized to celebrate the “Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World”.

IIS Scappi is also an active member of the Emilia-Romagna network of schools whose commitment is that of improving young people’s health and awareness on healthy eating.

It works to make its students aware of global issues such as food waste and sustainability.
