The project titled "Evaluation of the Climate Change Impact on Rail Operations in Türkiye," supported by the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UK-FCDO) Research Commissioning Centre, aims to comprehensively analyze the effects of climate change on railway infrastructure and operations in Türkiye. It seeks to identify the approaches and technologies needed to enhance the mitigation, adaptation, and resilience of the railway sector in the face of climate challenges.
The research will focus on identifying critical segments of the railway network that handle significant passenger and freight volumes, assessing their resilience to climate change impacts. It will also examine the broader effects of climate change on Türkiye’s limited railway network and provide actionable recommendations for the design, maintenance, and operation of railway lines. Furthermore, the project will analyze historical data on railway accidents and delays caused by extreme weather events to develop strategies for reducing such disruptions in the future.
By offering valuable insights for decision-makers and stakeholders, this study will play a pivotal role in strengthening the resilience of Türkiye’s railway infrastructure. Through international collaboration, it will also contribute to advancing Türkiye's efforts to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
