Course Description:

This course is designed to help students understand the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on the analysis and recording of business transactions, preparation, and interpretation of financial statements, accounting systems, banking and payroll activities, basic types of business ownership, and an accounting career orientation. Students will analyze the documentation of the complete accounting cycle to determine strengths, weaknesses, and to recommend improvements toward the financial status of a business. Mathematics and critical thinking are reinforced.

Course Units

Unit 1 – Understand accounting fundamentals & apply these skills for a business environment.

Unit 2 – Apply accounting procedures for a sole proprietorship & analyze the financial situation of a business to determine the necessary steps to improve the financial situation.

Unit 3 – Apply accounting procedures for a merchandising business & analyze the financial situation of a business to determine the necessary steps of improve the financial situation.

Unit 4 – Apply accounting procedures to perform banking and payroll activities through the use of online simulations and/or software simulations

Unit 5 – Apply accounting procedures to perform selected specialized accounting activities
